Ive been having trouble getting my birdseed jars to come out moist out of the pressure cooker. Ive tried adding more water but my jars still come out dry. Does anyone else have this problem. What do I do? By the way Im using penningtons brand seed with coat I buy from Walmart. And I presoak the grain for 24hrs then rinse then add 100ml h2o and then pressure cook.

What exact procedure did you use after time expired for the PC cycle. The biggest cause I see of dry jars is lifting the weight or relief valve to let pressure out faster at the end. That causes the grains that are at a temperature above the boiling point of water due to pressure, to suddenly loose all their moisture because the pressure that was holding the moisture in place disappears. Let the PC cool naturally until you can handle it without gloves or a pot holder before opening. RR

I never lift the weight. I let them cool and once pressure is done I shake them with an alcohal rag. Then I throw seven at a time inside a trashbag with a dash of alcohal on the bottom. I then seal the trashbag. The jars then heat the alcohal so the air is contam free.

If you mess with the jars while they're hot they will evaporate part their moisture out. Wait until they're cool. That's what is happening. Also, you don't need to put them in a bag. Just take out of the PC when they're cool to the touch. You should have a filter of some type on there to prevent contaminants from getting in. RR

Can you describe for us (a) your soaking/simmering/boiling/whatever method for the WBS and (b) precisely what your lids look like?

After they are done cooking I let the pressure cookers depresurize. Then I shake jars with alcohal soaked rag. THen I placce them in a trashbag with a dash of alcohal and tie the trashbag shut. For some reason the jars always come out dry. I do suspect the grain is not holding a lot of water. I dont know though. ANy suggestions?

my lids are a 1/4inch hole stuffed with polyfill and then covered with aluminum foil. I cook the jars for 45minutes at around 16psi.

My bad, I should have been more specific. How do you hydrate your WBS?
"I cook the jars for 45minutes at around 16psi. "
Hm. From what I hear, about 60 minutes is considered minimum for WBS 1-pt jars. But of course that doesn't answer your moisture issues.
If your soaking method is reasonable, everything else sounds about right. The lid design seems fairly sane.
So get back to us on the tek you use to hydrate your grains.
