Question I want to ask the experienced hunters
    #5696252 - 05/31/06 07:29 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

What is the most essential book to have for hunting mushrooms in the US, specifically the North East? Also any books that you recommend for hunting and identification in general.

Is there a book which covers all varieties of mushrooms including edibles, poisonous, and psychedelic?

Thanks!

Mushrooms demystified, Mushrooms of North East North America, www.mushroomexpert.com

Those three are very good resources.

I enjoy Mushrooms of North America by Roger Philips the most. The website for roger's mushrooms is specific to europe. www.mushroomexpert.com is great, it has searchable keys. For pure pictorial splendor, Audubon is good. Doesn't really teach you to think scientifically though.

For mushrooms in general, "Mushrooms Demystified," for Psilocybe species, "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World."
I use the Audubon Society Mushroom handbook for qiuck field reference (smaller size, though, means smaller database. I only use the AS handbook in the field).
