Police find massive grow-op, arrest four

Police find massive grow-op, arrest four
By KATE DUBINSKI, FREE PRESS REPORTER

For the second time in less than a week, provincial police have busted a massive marijuana grow operation in Middlesex County.

Monday's drug bust netted almost $4 million worth of marijuana plants in various stages of growth, as well as magic mushrooms, grow-op equipment and weapons.

"It's significant. The one last week was the largest one we'd seen in a couple of years, and this one was twice that size," OPP Const. Angela Baker said yesterday.

The grow-op was located in a home on Heritage Road, in Thames Centre, about 20 kilometres northeast of London.

Last Thursday, the OPP drug enforcement section busted a grow-op in a Middlesex Centre barn on Thirteen Mile Road, seizing about $2.2 million worth of pot plants and five kilograms of dried pot.

Four people were arrested in Monday's bust, Baker said.

Police aren't releasing the address of the Heritage Road bust for security reasons, Baker said.

But Heritage Road, partly paved and partly gravel, is away from more densely-populated urban areas where grow-ops are likely to be detected.

"One reason why grow-ops show up in rural areas is that they think they're not as likely to get caught," Baker said.

"There are not many prying eyes and in rural areas, people tend to keep to themselves."

Along with the 3,953 marijuana plants, police seized 96 grams of Psilocybin -- also known as magic mushrooms -- and equipment used to cultivate the two drugs.

Also found were two weapons and two devices banned in the Criminal Code.

The equipment is estimated to be worth about $7,500.

Charged in connection with the bust are Georges Doucet, 35, of London, Douglas Dupuis, 45, of Heritage Road, Thames Centre, Justine Dupuis, 19, of Windsor and Matthew Vigneaux, 27, of London.

The four face drug production, possession and trafficking charges and numerous weapons-related offences.

so they classify 96 grams of mushrooms as 96 grams of psilocybin? I don't get it.

what do you mean? 96grams. 96grams of mushrooms is converted into 96grams of psilocybin.

96 grams of mushrooms will not get you 96 grams of psilocybin if extracted. How do they say 96 grams of psilocybin? they say psilocybin is "magic mushrooms", which it isnt. It IS the chemical that makes them "magic", but its not magic mushrooms itself. They say its psilocybin, they say its mushrooms. Which is it? Ahhhhh.

If that's not sarcasm, you should be perm banned. (I can't tell with some of these noobs these days. If Reged: xx/yy/06, FEAR)

Calling it x grams of psilocybin is extremely common by both law enforcement and the media. I don't know the official reason they do it, but it's something besides complete ignorance, at least for the law enforcement. The fact is, mushrooms are not illegal. If they had peyote, they could be charged with having peyote, not just mescaline.

But with mushrooms, you're responsible for having the psilocybin, not the fungus. The best way to phrase it would probably be 96 grams of a psilocybin container. Often times you DO get charged with whatever drug you have *including* the weight of the container. If you have acid on a sugar cube, you're far more fucked than if you have it on paper. Though, with mushrooms the punishment is generally geared towards the 96 grams of 'psilocybin' being tuned for mushroom weight. (how often do they actually find pure psilocybin? Obviously it would be clearly stated and adjusted in such a rare situation though). Off the top of my head, 96 grams of psilocybin would be what, around 3000 doses?

saying 96 grams of mushrooms is 96 grams of psilocybin, is like saying 4 pounds of ergot is 4 pounds of LSD.

I don't know what you're trying to say?

This isn't a wet/dry issue. It is a chemical to fruitbody mass issue.

A dose of psilocybin is somewhere between 10-30mg (don't know the exact numbers off hand). A dose of mushrooms is closer to 3.5 grams. There is obviously a difference.

There is no difference to the cops. If you are found with a kilo of peruvian torch you will be charged with possession of a kilo of mescaline.

Just like they wont take the buds off the plants and dry them. You get weighed for the wet weight of the entire plant.

In the US, the courts will typically assume that one (cannabis) plant is worth one pound of product, regardless of the state or sex of the plant. If you get busted with ten male seedlings, they will charge you with possession of ten pounds with intent to deliver.

There is also the magical "round and multiply" factor that comes into play whenever any illegal drug is found. The cop finds a stem on the floorboard of the car. The cop writes it up as a gram or less. When the report gets filed, the "or less" gets dropped. When the media gets the report, the gram is typo'd to an ounce to make it sound/sell better. The DA doesn't want to waste the courts time, so he makes the same typo, going from an oz to a nice even pound, before taking it to court. When in court, the stem is now a pound with intent to sell. Of course, the police destroyed the bulk of the evidence, saving only a gram or so, to prove that they had something.

When illegal drugs are concerned, the courts toss common sense out the window... "burn the witch!"

I was there, I am one of the four, I was just searching my name online, and this message board came up, but it is not on the news sites anymore because of the outcome of this case. The ruling is definitely not what you would expect it to be.

When the raid began, all of us were at the house, the police came in, arrested everyone and began searching. The house was used just for weed and shrooms, so it wasn't a long search. The police then took us all out of the house, put us in pairs. Two of us were out in the back of an opp SUV, and myself and another were zip tied together and were told to sit in the grass by the road. It was a very hot day out that day, 31°c plus the humidity, and we were in leather and jeans, so it was so fucking hot. The cops started asking myself and the other guy I was zip tied to if there was anything else that they didn't find, we of course told them nothing and asked for our lawyers. The cops then spent the next hour ripping out or equipment, loading the plants in to a uhaul they had, took them about 2 hours to load it all. We sat outside the entire time.

The cops came back to talk to us again, which was against the law as we had asked for lawyers, and told us that their vehicles were full and they would send someone to pick us up. They took the other two guys, all the evidence and left us at the side of the road. They didn't come back for another 2 hours. We sat by the road and just laughed at the situation. The weapons they found were bats, asps and an axe handle. The asps, are collapseable steel batons, which are prohibited in Canada unless youre a pig. And having a bat in a grow house without a ball and glove is considered a weapon.

Now to the court.

My lawyer argued that the police didnt follow the law in regards to the chain of custody and detainment laws. Also, leaving us tied up by the side of the road was dangerous and a form of assault. Also, they did not make us aware of our charges, and they continued to question is after we had made it clear we wanted our lawyers. This was not my first run in with the cops, they know me well, and thats why they pulled the shit they did. After all of the evidence was reviewed, after being caught red handed, the judge threw everything out except for the weapons charges. I got 2 months house arrest. I also sued for mental anguish and torture and was awarded my legal fees, plus an additional $15000 for my road side torture.

So to those who said we were fucked, or were in big trouble, you are very wrong, I got a 2 month vacation and money to celebrate, win win.

Ya I did moments after posting. I'm fairly surprised they got away with the prohibited weapons especially at a grow site. Not surprised they got away with the drugs, that happens in Canada often. I'm skeptical the police left them on the side of the road unnsupervised though...

Surprising to be replying to an 8 year old post?

Well if Nash's post is true it's interesting. I think many people wonder about what led to these big busts and the end result.
