My MRI results

I had an MRI a week ago because I've been having lower back pains for a long time. I recently found out that I have a herniated disc, a bulging disk and I have degenerate disc disease.
For awhile I thought that most of my back pain was all mental. I thought that maybe I was inducing the pain so that I can ask my doctor for pain killers. I was hooked on vicodins pretty bad. I lost my health insurance for awhile and had to go without the vicodins and my body went through hell.
Then the pain started coming back. I got back on health insurance and got that MRI and now know that my pain was real and instead of relying on pain killers to make me comfortable, I'm going to try physical therapy.
Does anyone have any of these conditions? Can anyone give me any advise on types of exercises I can do to help relieve the pain?
Any words here will be appreciated.

Before you decide that your Doc is correct about your treatment. Please read, Healing Back Pain or The Mind Body Perscription by John Sarno, M.D.

can you get medical marijuana instead of opiates?
Yoga (with a yoga therapist that will make sure you don't hurt yourself) and tai chi will help a ton.
My taiji instructor was in a wheelchair from an injury until he started practicing, and now he has no pain.

He suggests physical therapy. This was before I had the MRI. I haven't seen him since I've heard the results(which I obtained from his nurse) so I haven't been able to discuss treatment options. I'll check that out. Thank you.

I ruptured my l4-l5 disk. It hurt like a motherfucker. It pinched a nerve, and the pain in my leg as a result was so bad that it nearly brought me to tears. I'm baffled as to why he would suggest phsyical therapy? I don't think it would help. You should be getting cortisone shots, or having the disk removed. If anything physical therapy would make it worse. I'm confused.

Oops, I just read that this was before the MRI. Stay away from YOGA, and PT!! Seriously. For the time being don't do any of that. I predict they will try to give you cortisone shots. If these work, then wonderful! If not, they will have to surgically remove it. If this happens, you will have difficulty walking, and will have to spend weeks in bed, but I assure you, it's not that bad. The worst part about having back surgery, is if you have to pee, you can't, as you can't control your muscles for a while, and you may have to get a catheter. Worst experience ever. Gives me the willies. I hope cortisone does the trick, which I would guess is a good possibility.

A catheter!?! I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor soon to discuss the results and options.
So I should holf off on the physical therapy until I see my doc? I thought that would be more helpful for me instead of any kind of drugs.
I'll ask him about those shots. Thank you.

hmm now i feel bad for recommending yoga.
You would have to ask your doctor about it, I'm guessing he would know best.
Since I know next to nothing other than that yoga is good.

Don't worry, the catheter was a one time thing, because I honestly couldn't pee for the life of me. That's what being put out for hours will do to you. Definitely don't go to physical therapy, as it could aggravate your back. And definitely ask about the cortisone shots. They didn't work for me, but my disk was severely bulging from the rupture. They had to remove it, and fuse the spine together where it was removed.

All this talk is scaring me.. When I was 15 I got in a bad ATV accident.. I was rushed to the ER and they gave me x-rays and MRI's they didn't find anything.. I had a very badly sprained neck and some cuts and bruises.. Well ever since my back has never been right.. Little things will mess it up and it will hurt for a while.. Well just recently I was lifting rocks to help my mom build a stone wall and I tried lifting one way to heavy and i really hurt my back.. I was okay they pain was there but it wasn't really bad.. Then 2 days latter there was a lighting storm and I was sitting in my GF's bedroom and I swear lighting hit her air conditioner and it made me jump.. Pulling my back even worse.. I went to get out of bed and pain shot through my mid to lower back.. excruciating pain... I made it to the bathroom and Had a hard time even whipping my ass.. I could barley stand, sit, or lay down.. everything was painful.. I had my GF take me to urgent care.. I got there and they gave me some tremadol and gave me some x-rays.. they gave me a prescription to Skelaxin, Naproxen, and APAP/CODEINE 300/30 MG TAB... She gave me a Valium and sent me home.. It is two days latter and the pain is still very bad actually even worse then yesterday.. I have a follow doctors appt today at 3:30.. I'm sure they will give me some MRI's but I need something better for the pain.. I could barely sleep last night.. I would wake up with awful back spasms and just take more and more codeine and skelaxin.. it barely seems to help...

I had the same thing wrong with my back in high school. I was put in physical therapy for about 6 months and the pain went away. I have problems with it still every once in awhile but for the most part physical therapy killed the pain. Try physical therapy and see how it works out for you. Good luck, I hope your pain problems are solved soon!

When I first saw my doctor about the pain, he prescribed Norflex, valium, vicodin, and prednizone. All those together helped my back feel stronger. There were times when I couldn't walk straight. I used to live upstairs and I couldn't climb the steps. Get the MRI then talk to your doc about what kind of treatment you should do. I have yet to do the second part. I do however have an appoinment with a physical therapist.
After reading the replies, I'm going to ask about other alternatives.
Funny thing, I never had an accident. I didn't fall on my back. The only thing that I remember ever doing was getting my back popped, and that did hurt. Maybe he did it wrong or something.

I have struggled with back pain and have done some good reading about pain in general. If your MRI shows it's from an injury I think western medicine is a good choice for treatment. Back injuries are no joke, it's one of the most important areas of the body. Some western treatments are great, PT, surgery, etc. But some are horrible, like, "take these pills and call me in a week". So you'll want to know whether there is injury or not. That's an important question.
With that said, Traditional Chinese Medicine has taught me some amazing things about pain. Is the pain sharp or dull? If it's sharp there is problem with blood flow, referred to as blood stagnation. If it's a dull pain, this can be a more ethereal stagnation known as qi stagnation. But the dull pain also often indicates a weak organ that is underneath the area of pain. For example, people with weak kidneys will get ambiguous lower back pain that seems to be unrelated to the actual back muscles or spine, like a headache type pain. Locating the area of pain is important in this case. This information isn't that important for you to know for treatment, just thought I'd share.
You should consider seeing and acupuncturist. Acupuncture is AMAZING for pain. And since it's not physical like PT or Yoga, there is no risk for injury. You should try it at least once. I guarantee at least temporary relief. If you go regularly it will greatly increase healing of any injury as well. I highly recommend it, even in conjunction with western medicine treatments. Some herbs prescribed by the acupuncturist could do some good as well.

You can rupture a disk simply by sneezing. You never know when or how it will happen. I noticed 2 people claimed that you should try PT, however I still think they are wrong. Ask your doctor, and I'll bet he says thats a no go. I received PT when I injured my back, and it only made things worse, and after I had the MRI and told the doctor I was receiving PT, he freaked out, told me to stop immediately.

Actually, I haven't had sex in a long time. Maybe that's the problem. I don't have any pain right now. I'm just worried about future injuries and what kind of pain that may come along with this type of condition.
The drugs are working lovely for now. If anything, I get a bit uncomfortable when my back starts acting up. Not painful uncomfortable...just weird uncomfortable.
