Diskeeper 10 Pro, need help with setup
    #5695534 - 05/31/06 04:15 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

This program looks great, (thanks for the link Ythan  ) but it's help files are incredibly unhelpful.  "This section has a pulldown menu with these options!:  1, 2, 3......"

Thank you, Captain Obvious!  Because i couldnt read the options in the pulldown menu myself!

Ok, so i need to know wtf they do, cuz it seems im a retard.
Specificaly, i'd like to set up scheduled defrags.  I've enabled I-FAAST, and i'm starting to set up 'Primary Defrag Job Properties'.

Here's where i get stuck.
I want to schedule my drives to defrag, one by one, on the weekends (when im over at the GFs) starting around Sat 4am.

The only option it gives for this is
Schedule Type:  Custom
Frequency:  Countinously  <<<?????
Days:  sat
Start time:  4am
End time:  blah?  <<<<????

So this is confusing.  When i pick 'continuously' in frequency, the description on the bottom is "A countinous schedule will run on the selected volume over and over until the time period has ended".

So it will just keep defraging the same drive over n over till the end time? What if i only give it 1hr?  What if i want it to defrag one of my other drives after it finishes the first? I mean can i set ALL my drives to begin at say 4am and it wont fuck things up?

I'd really just like it to start at 4am on sat, defrag drive 1, then move on to drive 2, 3, etc until its done, then stop. edit: And repeat next weekend by itself.

edit2: oh also, i run F@H.  I noticed in CPU priorities, there's an "I/O disk activity" option which suspends defrag on disk activity.  I'd like it to defrag so that F@H doesnt bother it.  I have folding on lowest priority, so i put this one higher, 'Low'.  Im not sure about the I/O thing however.  It would suck if F@H constantly stopped Diskeeper from running.

Help?

If you select 'run continuously', it will work on the drive until it can't defragment it anymore, then stop. It won't try and defragment again until the next time the schedule rolls around. So you could schedule your C drive to run continuously from 4am to 5am on Weekends, and D from 5am to 6am. Since it probably won't take a full hour to defragment your drive, there will be some time when it's idle between jobs. Another option is setting 'smart scheduling' to run 'except on weekdays', that will automatically increase or decrease the job frequency depending on how fragmented your drive gets between jobs.

If you won't be at your computer when the scheduled job is running, there's really no point in enabling the I/O Smart feature. At the same time, Folding@home only flushes data to disk ever 15 minutes (by default) so that won't have much of an impact either. Enable it if you want, it won't hurt anything.

Finally, priority at 'low' (how you have it) is ideal if you're Folding.

I think that's all your questions if I missed something LMK.

Peace,

-Y

Do i have to keep diskeeper open to do this, or will it open itself at 4 am?

Nope it runs as a system service so you can literally 'set it and forget it'. You'll know it's working because your hard drive will go nuts, but also it'll put an icon in your systray.

Hey Ythan, speaking of services, i run an old PC, so before i run WoW i tend to shut down any unecessary processes running. This can take quite a bit of time, especialy since i do it so often. Got any recommendations for a small progy that'll just shut down selected processes with one click?

Not really, but it looks like you could use kill.exe along with a simple batch file.

@echo off
kill pornodialer.exe
kill goatse.exe
"C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\IWantYourSoul.exe"

does it kill them all at once, or is their a way to kill in an order so you don't slow things up?
