Tennstud. How big is 20lb pre-pasteurized?
    #5695245 - 05/31/06 03:04 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, So I'm about to order from tennstud.com. I figure I should order now so I'm not stuck with fully colonized jars and no substrate. I will be inoculating my jars this weekend. I want to get pre-pasteurized because I have never pasteurized myself and I'm nervous about messing it up. I'm going to buy some dry hpoo as well but I want some substrate to work with that I know was pasteurized properly. So my question is, how much volume is the 20lb bag of pre-pasteurized hpoo from tennstud.com? Like 2 gallons, or more like 8? I should have plenty of spawn to work with since I'll be inoculating around 2 dozen half-pint jars. What experience can you tennstud customers share with me? Which products have you ordered and what does it look like when you get it. Pictures would be awesome.

This is my first time using the casing method. (and my first post on shroomery!)

It should give you about 3 inches in a 64 quart tub.

You will want to spawn it with at least 5-7 quarts.

Does that help?

Wait, 5 quarts? So that's like 20 half-pint jars. Is that accurate? What ratio would that be? Not 1:10 right? Maybe I should not use half-pint jars. I figured they would colonize faster and allow me to pull out contaminated jars with less overall loss. Maybe I should use bags?

20 pounds pre-pasteurized is 2 filter patch bags almost full.
Like 85%full.

I just mixed that same amount with 4 quarts and it is looking beautiful.
I use about a 4:1 ratio, or as close as I can get.

hmmm. Ok, but I have never filled a bag like that, I usually fill about 25% I think. I make them about the same as the bags from sporeworks (which is what I started on). I thought overfilling was something to avoid. So let's just say I had bags from sporeworks, I would use like 4 of those as spawn on 20lb of hpoo? Those bags are advertised as 1lb each, so that would be 5:1 ratio (hpoo:spawn). That seems like a lot of spawn, but I have never used this method so what do I know.

Just remember the more spawn you use the faster it will colonize and the less chance you will get a contam.

I always used a high spawn ratio because once you learn LC and G2G you can throw around spawn like its nothing :yesnod:

I keep forgetting about LC. Would I just pour it straight into the hpoo? I will definitely try that.

Does you know about using raw honey for LC? There is a honey store in the area that sells locally made, totally raw unfiltered honey, which contains pollen, propolis, royal jelly, etc. I wonder if this would help or hurt the mycelium.

The LC is for inoculationg grain jars not poo. It speeds the growth because the spores are pre germed.

Use light corn syrup, its cheap and proven to work properly.
