Need clarification on CASING
    #5694981 - 05/31/06 01:41 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I know this is worn out, but I can't find a specific answer. Since I won't be ph testing, what ratio of oyster flour to verm to peat moss to water do I use to approximate the correct ph? I cannot get any litmus strips at this time. Is it absolutely necessary to test ph when only using the calc carb?

no, its not only necessary to test the ph when using calcium carbonate.
from my understanding, it'll only raise the ph to about 8 at the most, which mushroom mycelium will still thrive in.
why everyone says test the ph is because peat and verm, and even your drinking/bottled water has varying ph's. peat usually has a lower than 6 ph, which mycelium doesnt like.
as for how much calcium carbonate, since it isnt readily dispersed (slow dissolver), and the fact that even at its most potent, it cant burn the mycelium...there really is no limit on how much you can add, save for altering the physical geography of the casing.
as far as i understand, suitable ratios are around 1 cup for every 3 cups of peat AND 3 cups of verm. ..something like that.

Cool, I feel better now. I just don't wanna screw this up after all the time and money I've spent thus far. Would boiling water nuetralize the ph? I wanna eliminate as many uncertainties as possible.

I think roadkill said that:
15 1/2 cups of verm
12 cups of sphagnum peat moss
3 1/2 cup sof coco coir
2 tablespoons of hydrated lime
3 1/2 cups of oyster shell lime
and water as needed

would give you a good casing mix close to the proper ph levels. if anybody has anything to add to this list then go ahead because i am going to be doing a casing as well. would bone meal be good?
