Contam shield for PF jars
    #5694889 - 05/31/06 01:08 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I was wondering if i could use cotton wool pads as a contam shield in place of the dry verm layer on top of the substrate. The reason i ask is because i only have a microwave for sterilization at the mo and the cakes tand to shrink and the verm falls down the side.
Im pretty sure it would work fine, just like a second opinion

Maybe i could put a thin layer of cotton below the dry layer of verm, just to stop it from falling down the sides

The cakes shrink because the water boils off. Unlike heating a jar in boiling water and steam where the jar slowly rises to the correct temperature and then sits there, a jar that is microwaved burns off water alone. Microwaves work by heating up water which comes off as steam, that's why microwaving a lot of foods dehydrates them. A microwave is a bad idea for colonizing cakes in general.

Maybe puting them in a closed glass bowl of water and then put in the microwave? Might do the trick if i can put a heavy weight on the bowl lid to contain pressure and more staem.

Cotton has a strong tendency to contaminate. Use polyfil--pillow stuffing. You can buy it at Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby.
