Cocaine-related deaths continue to rise statewide May 31, 2006 - bradenton.com
Cocaine-related deaths continue to rise as medical examiners linked the substance to almost 2,000 deaths statewide in 2005, according to official statistics.
A commission of medical examiners across the state reported that cocaine-related deaths increased by 14.2 percent compared with 2004, according to a Florida Department of Law Enforcement report released Tuesday. Out of 172,000 people who died in Florida last year, medical examiners said they found traces of various drugs in more than 75,000 of them during autopsies.
The commission also reported that methadone, a substance usually used to help those with an addiction to opiates, was found in a large number of people who were autopsied last year, the report stated.
In District 12, where medical examiners performed autopsies of residents from Manatee, Sarasota, and DeSoto counties, cocaine was found in the bodies of 83 people.
The number was the highest in the district since the commission began tracking cocaine-related deaths in 1991, according to the commission's statistics. Last year, it was the cause of death for 48 people.
Traces of methadone were found postmortem in the bodies of 49 people, and the drug was cited as the cause of death for 42 of them, according to the report.
A spike in deaths related to prescription drugs such as Oxycodone and Hydrocodone was also reported.
In District 12, authorities cited the two drugs as the cause of death for 47 people last year, according to the commission's statistics.
On Thursday, Sarasota police arrested a 32-year-old woman, charging her with stealing 13,000 pills, about 10,000 were Oxycodone, from a Walgreens pharmacy.
Police said the store supervisor, who works at the Walgreens, 1224 S. Tamiami Trail, called authorities after he suspected an employee of stealing the pills, according to a Sarasota police news release.
The supervisor said the store's surveillance camera showed Tracie Trott, of Hyde Park Street, dispensing the pills without prescriptions.
Detectives reported that Trott started taking the pills and selling them as long ago as last August.
Trott faces charges of grand theft, trafficking in illegal drugs, and dealing in stolen property, according to the release.
She was booked into the Sarasota County Jail.

I've bought a gram of coke once to see what it was like. The rush was ok, but my nose itched afterward, burned for a couple days and it felt like I had come down with a cold. That was the first and last gram of coke I will ever fuck with.
