USP ether is expensive

Extracting ether in water from starter fluid yielded a pretty dilute result, even with multiple pulls using the same water and different batches of fluid.
So, I'd have to just plain buy the stuff. That's a real pain in the ass even to find a supplier that would sell to the public. In fact I'm still not sure if the one I found will sell to the public.
Even the chemical supplier that I did find wants $67.50 for 500mL of USP ether. There is cheaper ether available, but if anyone is going to use the stuff, it needs to be USP approved so I know it's safe for pharmacological use.
I'm frustrated

Beg a politician for a grant. I think you deserve it, and I'm sure they will too.

Sure, I'll send them a "Proposal for an appropriation of funding for research into the inebriant properties of Diethyl Ether"

What about using distillation as opposed to extraction?

I lack the setup to do that. You really don't want ether fumes rolling around on the floor... one spark and suddenly your world is one of fire and pain.
