Anyone else not care for watching sports?
    #5691744 - 05/30/06 06:02 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Football, hockey, baseball, it all really bores me and seems like a waste of time. Some people get REALLY into it and look silly. Others pretend that they're REALLY into it because that's what everyone else is doing and they probably feel that's what they're supposed to do.

So people get together and watch a game and pretend like they know more about the game than the players on TV, or in some cases pretend like they know much about the game at all.

Watching sports just doesn't entertain me, does anyone else share this view? Or if you love watching sports, what about it makes it so interesting?

I used to be into watching pro baseball, basketball, and football. It is too time consuming and overwhelming these days though. All of the players I'm used to are pretty much gone or got traded.
My teams are totally different these days, it's like watching a bunch of strangers.
I hate not knowing who the hell some of these guys are.
I always played sports myself.. it's more fun to play than to watch.
Every once in a while, once a month (if that) - I'll watch part of some game here and there. Still not as fun as it used to be.

I've watched perhaps 12 sports games in my lifetime. I just do not like watching sports. The only game I can stand to watch is baseball, and that's because I know the game from playing it.

If I'm going to get entertainment from sports, I'll do so by playing. Watching them is just not interesting to me.

I can't stand watching baseball...so fucking slow.
Pro basketball sucks...the whole game is just a bunch of fouls.
The only sport I really like to watch is soccer.

Agreed, I actually like watching soccer, probably because I played for 7 years when I was younger.

I don't mind watching sports. It's OK. But that's probably because every member of my family, without exception, lives and breathes sports. That's all anyone talks about. Where I'm from, that's all people seem to live for. I've seen church services let out early because of a basketball game. That's just how things are here.

Whenever I go to a football or basketball game, if it is a good game, I can get into it and enjoy it. There was a time when I played and was more into it, but I came to the realization that people around here live their lives around sports. When it becomes a religion and stops being a game it stops being fun and it gets depressing.

The education system in my state is among the worst in the nation. We graduate people from high school who can barely write their names. Basic levels of literacy are sacrificed so Bonehead can stay on the team and win the title. School systems around here get shitty materials and equipment; hell, I remember using textbooks published fifteen or twenty years prior. But the football stadiums, fucking forget it. We have Astroturf and the big LCD replay screens. I am not exaggerating. Students here are denied basic education in order for their parents to be entertained every Friday. Makes my stomach turn.

It just seems like sports franchises only exist as marketing tools, to which end they are highly effective. The more people think about and talk about sports, the less concerned they are about more important issues, such as how many companies advertised by sports teams fuck over the very people being entertained by such teams.

It just takes all the fun out of it for me.

I derive pleasure in watching all sports in person. That stuff is fun to me.

However, on TV things are different. Baseball on TV is mind-numbingly boring. Basketball is OK on TV. Hockey is OK on TV. Football is great on TV. Soccer on TV makes me want to commit suicide it is so boring.

You'll probably never catch me watching a sports game by myself (in fact I'm positive I've never watched more than 20 seconds of one by myself).

On the other hand, I can enjoy a good game of hockey provided I'm with friends who enjoy watching hockey and I also need some beers in me first :smirk:

Watching sports = boring.

On the whole, I can't stand watching sports.

I'll watch soccer and baseball. Thats about it. Only if I'm incredibly bored. I do like going to pro baseball games though, thats fun.

I have a feeling I'd like hockey if I knew how it worked. :P

Well I know there has to be rules. Being an American, I don't really have anyone around to tell me the rules of hockey.

I despise anything played with a ball. I can't watch any of them. And the only ball sport I can even enjoy playing is golf. And mainly thats just getting drunk and driving the carts around!

Hockey is semi-entertaing but only because I used to go to hockey games a lot as a kid. And motorsports are fun if theres lots of crashes. I can also enjoy winter sports (the winter olympics are usually fairly good). But the summer games blow. Swimming, diving, running, jumping, gymnastics....blah.

BTW- I don't count billiards and bowling as sports. If you can smoke cigs and drink beer while playing at a competative level it just don't count as a sport in my book!

I'll root for my home team, but all I care about is whether we're ahead or not. I have no interest in the game itself.
