When I signed up for classes at community college I had to take a state exam. The exam determined my placement. I placed very well but had I not I would have had to take remedial classes which would have been required for upper level classes but would have not counted towards my major.
I performed horribly in high school and yet have recieved nothing less than an A in all of my post-high classes. I don't believe in the extreme emphasis on education in American especially considering the abysmal return. However if my money is to be spent on someone else I would much rather it is spent on someone who cares about their education.

Most people who drop out of HS are immature and make mistakes. I see no problem with them maturing enough to want to become a contributing member of society.

Why go to high school then?
College becomes nothing more then a safety net, and not the higher education it was institutionalized for.

College, aside from the invaluable information one can mine there if possessed of a curious mind, shows to the whole world a willingness to start and persevere through tribulation,s eventually arriving at a finishing point. It shows a dogged determination, and other things prospective employers may want in an employee.
College exists on many levels, academia being only the most basic of them.
Social maturation, all kinds of things can be gleamed in college.
One must find their own definition for college, and remember there are many paths, or even maybe there are no paths.
