RedLeafson said: I have been trying to hunt mushrooms in cow fields in north central Florida. I hunt with a friend and we have been to a couple of fields with salt licks. Once he sees them, he says there'll be no mushrooms because salt licks inhibit the growth of mushrooms on the dung. I have been searching the internet for information about this but have yet to find anything to back up his claims. Could anyone give me a link to some information or at least confirm or deny his claim?
Thanks a lot!
If its a field that produces mushrooms its a field that produces mushrooms.. Salt Blocks may stop mushrooms from growing in about a 48 inch radius around the block.. Not all fields produce mushrooms and salt blocks are planted in my hunting spots

So basically, the cows ingesting the salt does not make their pies less inhabitable to mushrooms. Heavy concentrations of salt (such as 48in radius around salt block) likely inhibit growth, but I think you will find some pastures without salt licks that don't produce mushrooms, and then some other pastures with salt licks, that produce regardless. Where are you located?
happy hunting.

I live in louisiana. There's a field I used to hunt that was most plentiful near the salt licks.

Yeah, salt is actually a vital part of any animals health. Keeps frem dehydration and other stuff. It will not inhabit the growth of cubes on cow pies.

Obviously too much salt would be a hindrance to fungal growth however it typically isn’t leeched into the soil in such quantities. Often the cows will hang out around the salt lick contributing important nutrients in a concentrated area.

----- Last night’s mushroom dream: Found three species of amazingly large Gymnopilus growing under a house in large groupings. The mushrooms were being guarded by a chimera like creature with features of a skunk, raccoon, and red fox.
