Caerulipes... What temps do they like?
    #5690606 - 05/30/06 12:46 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hey I went to check my usual spots today, (after a short vacation at the beach) and to my disappointment, they were all gone/dried up.

What temperature do caerulipes flourish?

Whats the highest temperature they can take?

I think due to low rain/high temps, they died here, its 94 degrees today:sun::sun::sun:...

I would imagine that 90+ is probably too hot for them..
A lot of the different species that grow in the woods won't fruit in those conditions.

I believe high 70's is optimal. I'm going to search later today. It's been raining and it's about 80.

Yesterday and today, I checked five new places and found Bluefoot at three of them. One spot was loaded with shrooms, but it was very difficult to hunt there. I spent several hours this afternoon alternating between swimming through thick stands on Japanese Knot-weed and climbing high piles of woody debris left by last year's floods. I fell though a couple times, but fortunately I didn't hurt myself. I think I have figured these little guys out. It's been in the upper 80's for the last couple of days and there were plenty of fresh pins. It rained pretty hard here on Saturday. Guzman reported finding them in Mexico, and it's always hot down there. I don't think they are very picky about temperature, but they do like rain. The reason why Bluefoot is so rarely found is because his habitat is rare and usually very difficult to get to. But once you find the right habitat there are plenty of them there.

Cool thanks dan and under.

But also, can these shrooms grow straight out of mud/grass or do they need to be growing on some type of wood?

I'm contemplating writing up a report, but it may only be relevant to the Ohio Valley, because all of my spots (nine so far) have been either along the Ohio river, or within several miles of it. BTW I also heard from another source that these mushrooms fruit Spring, Summer, and Fall.

I'll write something up tonight.

I think they need wood, but I suspect they may also be attempting a parasitic or mycorrhizal relationship with Polygonum cuspidatum, which would be profound on so many levels. This invasive weed is taking over most riparian habitats in this part of the world, completely crowding out native species. Even trees can't compete, because the thick canopy shades out any sapling that might sprout from seeds. With the trees go all the critters which depend on the trees for support. If unchecked, Polygonum cuspidatum will crowd out all other life forms along the streams and rivers. It is already doing so in many places I have hunted. But for every evil there is a counter balancing good, and it seems God may have designed evolution so that enlightening fungi spreads with the invasive weed... I need to think about this more before writing about it... but there is something big going on here me thinks.

The active Gyms I find are few and far between from June till September. You have to find a forest which stays damp from lots of shade usually within sight of water, It also needs to be a forest which has been there long enough to have rotten fallen logs. I've also found them in WV and Pa. I think the mushroom hunting is especially good here because we have such a diverse ecosystem. We also have been receiving above average rainfall for the last three or four years, which the mushrooms just love. I think it rained everyday in June and almost every day in July two years ago. I wounder sometimes if this is a semi-permanent change in weather patterns which is changing this area into a temperate rain forest. If that's the case then maybe some of the active wood-loving Psilocybes from the west coast could make this their home, or perhaps the extra rain will allow Psilocybe caerulipes to expand its habitat and become common. But I digress...

Yeah, Ohio is a great place to hunt for edibles. Actives are here, but finding them can be like finding a needle in a haystack. The good news is that once you find them you can check that spot routinely. The active Gym logs from which I harvest produce 2 to 4 flushes per year and produce year after year until the log is completely decomposed, or until it is overrun by another mushroom.

I Hope this helps you decide about making the drive.

Hey shroomydan,

I dunno if its just in va but i find these mushies growing heavily around man holes along side the river where im at. I think they like the sewage a lil. Or maybe human disturbance. But either way there is a strong abundance of em this year. Good luck and maybe a spore print from va to compare them could help with your paper. Or some habitat pics.

Interesting shroomydan

Under, do you think you could get any pics of the mushrooms growing around manholes? I've checked like 15 man holes and none had any mushrooms growing around them, were the man holes you saw deeper into the woods, or along the main paths?

Thanks

just thought i'd chime in here, and say that i recently found a small patch of what i believe to be Caerulipes growing here in semi-urban northern va. Actually it was in a notably unnatural habital, in the curb -side plantings in front of a hotel. Right on the edge of where the wood chip mulch surrounding a tree meets the grass. Though overall, within a half mile of the Potomac River. I will work up a post in the next few days.
