Cortinarius rotundisporus paranoia
    #5687453 - 05/29/06 05:18 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Ever since seeing this post on cortinarius rotundisporus (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5678802#Post5678802), I've been very paranoid about consuming what I find in the field. I've identified and consumed psilocybe subs several times in the past, but was wondering what the likelihood is that a blue bruising, mulch-loving 'sub' could instead be c. rotundisporus?

Can any NZ or Aussie shroomers out there offer words of advice?

Cortinarius can easily be distinguished from Psilocybe by spore color. Corts drop rusty brown spores; Psilocybes drop purple brown spores.

I Know what you mean! I've just been reading up on "deadly mushrooms to aviod" http://www.mushroomexpert.com/deadly.html

Fortunately the above are relatively easy to distinguish from subs after you know what your doing. ie it grows directly from dead wood. Could easily be missed by someone just starting hunting - and its deadly.

I too found these one day and thought I had come across something magical. At first I though the blueish markings were bruising similar to that of psilocybin, and then I noticed that there was some blueing on the stipe, and when I snapped the stipe off to complete a spore print I noticed it was blue. However when I did a spore print it was dark red and this really surprised me.
