Any way to save it?
    #5686206 - 05/29/06 12:04 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

A friend of mine recently inoculated 6 jars and all of them were contaminated except one.  This one would be ready to birth in probably 3 more days, but he just noticed today a green spot at the very top of the jar, bottom of the cake.  Could he wait until its ready to birth and cut it off, or simply discard it and try again, he lives in california, and it's hard to get spores, so he'd really like to save it if possible.

Not worth it, imo. If that green gets loose in your house, it's bad news for future projects. There's already enough trich in the air anyway without risking a bloom in your house. I recommend sterilizing the jars again before opening to clean out.

Molds are almost always introduced at inoculation, so review your sterile procedures and see where you can improve.

Thank you, it was my friends first try, he just inoculated 8 more about 3 days ago, and was much more careful. He's a tattoo artist, so this time he used an autoclave on everything.

bleach does not kill mold, just to let you know.

None of that is necessary. Molds are killed by temperatures far below boiling. Just wash the jars with soap and water and they're ready to reuse.
