If you had to write a 3-5 page research paper that explored an issue from a global perspective. What would you choose as your topic? The issue must be controversial.
I was thinking global warming, or the war in Iraq...but I feel like everyone is my class is going to do that...I want to be more original than that. Any ideas?

global warming and Iraq might not be the greatest topics for a research paper. You won't find much hard, cited, referenced information. I'd try some like "Patent Protection in Emerging Chinese Marketplace" or "Fraud in Research: Hwang Woo Suk's Stem Cell Debacle"

I fun topic might be genetically engineered food crops. It's controversial and you will have no trouble finding journal articles for and against it.
On the pro side you have things like genetically modifies rice that can prevent starvation in third world countries, and on the con side there are things like GM corn that produce medicines (What if the pollen gets into the food crop?), and "Round-UP Ready" crops that may escape cultivation and become super weeds.
Just an idea.

Excellent ideas right there.
If it were me, I would find a topic, such as genetic engineering, and relate it to some factor of globalization, i.e. trade liberalization, deregulation, etc. But that's because I find globalization to be the most fascinating topic in the world. Ultimately you're not going to get around writing about it, as these governing economic principles make everything else mentioned here possible, or at least it is indispensable for putting all these things in context.
Two websites that will be more helpful than the Shroomery for your paper:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/
http://www.wikipedia.org/
Obviously you will need more sources than these, as these are just reference sources. But they are damn good reference sources. More suggested topics:
Sri Lanka and the Oslo Talks
The African Union in the Darfur Crisis
Ethnic and Regional Unrest in East Timor
China (et al) and Internet Censorship
All these were pulled from today's headlines. I don't know how much peer-reviewed work you can find on them, but it's only a quick trip to EBSCO Host to find out (if your school subscribes to it, if not there should be some comparable search engine available, though it is my understanding that EBSCO is by far the best).
Good luck with your paper!

Thank you for all the great ideas! I have just started looking into genetic engineering...tons on info.
Wikipedia is my best friend! I love that site. I will also be pulling articles from foreign news sources such as Pravda (Russian) and Al Jazeera (Middle East). This is will help me give viewpoints from other nations on similar topics. Keep the ideas coming though, I'm not completely decided yet.

In last sems Research/Argumentative Writing course, we had to write a paper on a current event/issue, except that we had to model it after 'A Modest Proposal'...a satirical paper. I did mine on crime/prison. Don't pick something such as drug legalization or global warming...it's overdone. But there are really too many possibilities to help you.
