NSW shrooms

Well, it seems Melbourne's going off and TAS is in full swing... SA have their own thread... are any of us elusive NSW shroomers still about? In the Sydney/Blue Mountains the season has been pretty miserable so far. My favourite patches in the Mountains, which were yielding hundreds of mushrooms this time last year, are completley fruitless and the ground is bone dry, despite a wee bit of rain recently. We're just not getting nearly enough rain.. I haven't bothered looking in Sydney at all although I've heard the recent downpours have helped a little.
Anyway, I was forced to move on to new spots and I found a little garden which I guess must be getting watered fairly regularly, and found a modest crop of subs there.. nearly all very small unfortunatley, due to dryness I guess.
I gotta say though, this years Mountain shrooms are small, but they pack a punch! We "tested" a mere 8 - 9 grams fresh (about 7 tiny shrooms) and were quite blown away! I expected a very mild trip, but after a delayed onset I was well into shroomland and ended up laughing so hard and getting so excited that I threw up very suddenly. Be careful with these babies!

Hi Fina,
The season around Sydney has been very bad. I have only been able to find some Amanita muscaria unfortunately no Psilocybe species have popped up at all.

Hey MagicRooms.. yeah, although we're getting some fairly heavy downpours they never last long enough. One day of rain is followed by a week of sunshine. I've heard rumours of a few subs in Sydney but I haven't looked. If there's slim pickings in the Mountains I'll just assume Sydney will be very tough. Keep trying though, the season's still far from over.

Yes BTW I heard on the news a few days ago that it's been the dryest autumn this year, in the Sydney area for 52 years.

Well, there's been buckets awash over Sydney the last few days. Does anyone know how long it takes till I should go out looking for gems?

Hey Treeyei, A few days of heavy rain usually sees a few subs popping up. Since we've had ideal shroom weather for the last week solid, this weekend should be the go... I had just about given up on Sydney, but I might have a quick look around my old spots here. Let us know how you go.

Hi Spacegirl Well I finally was able to get out to the spots that were happening last year and did indeed find some! about 25 grams wet... but many were quite blue and damaged from frost. I am wondering something. Is there a better way to pick, so as to help encourage growth again later or next year? I mean if I pick from the roots, is this bad, or is it the spores that really matter?

but let's imagine that you've only got one spot so far that you've ever found any, and they're so sparse this year, and you've got one day to get away up there. That bit of stem that you leave in the ground can contextually seem quite valuable if you anticipate having so little in a season. So, if it is true that it makes no difference if you cut it, or pull it out completely, than I might as pull. I mean I read this somewhere here (can't find it dough!@#!) on the argument that it is the spores which propogate an enviroment and so it makes no difference if you pull out the whole stem. I'd like to believe this but only if it's true?

first post - woot!
now that the childish immaturity is out of the way...
I live in The Hills District, and I think I've done alot of research, so I'm going on my first walk today... I shall let everyone know how it goes.
I'm glad to see we've got alot of aussies in here to help out. The gf lives in the blue mountains, any specific towns to look around up there? The mountains aren't exactly small lol

I walked all the top half of winston hills, and I even found places that I didn't realise existed there! lol
I found some nice out-of-the-way woody, and wet, areas too... alas no mushrooms. One place with cow pats all over it, and nothing there either.
Mind you, I did find someone that is growing Peyote!! I wonder how they would respond to someone knocking on their door and making a few enquiries haha
I shall check parts of Baulkham Hills later on.

So there are a few hunters in the sydney area, excellent! I live in between sydney and the blue mountains and i'm surrounded by farms and fields, i'm very new to all this and just started exploring a couple of weeks ago, havn't managed to find any psilocybe species yet but have come across some strange looking mushrooms, i've taken some photos and will post them when i can.
Lucky we had that downpour of rain last weekend, i went searching today and found a patch of promising looking mushrooms, they were only just starting to grow so i'll be checking up on them the next couple of days, will let you all know how it goes, happy hunting!
By the way, i was planning on taking a trip up to the mountains in the next couple of days, anyone know if there are any towns or areas better suited to mushrooms then others? blackheath compared to leura for example?
