Trustworthiness

How do we accurately determine whom we can trust?
A professor at my university once said that trust exists only when we believe ourselves capable of handling a betrayal.
More detailed studies have arrived at these aspects of trustworthiness:
Quote:
Ability refers to an assessment of the other's knowledge, skill, or competency. This dimension recognizes that trust requires some sense that the other is able to perform in a manner that meets our expectations.
Integrity is the degree to which the trustee adheres to principles that are acceptable to the trustor. This dimension leads to trust based on consistency of past actions, credibility of communication, commitment to standards of fairness, and the congruence of the other's word and deed.
Benevolence is our assessment that the trusted individual is concerned enough about our welfare to either advance our interests, or at least not impede them. The other's perceived intentions or motives of the trustee are most central. Honest and open communication, delegating decisions, and sharing control indicate evidence of one's benevolence.
How do you decide whether to trust someone? Is it necessary to trust others, or would we be better off avoiding trust altogether?

That quotation is very well expressed.
Honestly, I think trust is necessary, in that it is automatic, a result of our analysis of aspects of reality and cause and effect, as it relates to our actions and what we seek to gain.
The fact that I am going to share the same space with someone implies that I trust that they will not stab a knife into my chest.
 Peace.

For the most part, I give everyone the same trust and respect I'd give to any of my closest friends, until that person gives me a reason not to - Sometimes this happens within the first few words of meeting the person, though I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt. I dunno, guess I'm just trying to see the good in everybody..
I don't think it is necessary to 'trust' in anything, but it is something we do to validate our own peace-of-mind; feeling that you know this person is not going to cheat you, lie to you, and is going to build that buttress properly so that the mineshaft doesn't collapse and kill 12 workers, does wonders for the human brain - we're afraid of enough already.
As for determining who you can trust yourself? Well, those reasons are entirely up to you to discover; who am I to say why you should or should not trust this person - somebody who is a jackass in my eyes could very well be your friend who has never done you a single wrong.

I'll trust a person until they lie to me. If I catch them in a lie I can't trust them anymore.
It has nothing to do with whether I can handle the lie or "betrayal".

To earn ones trust is quite hard, to loose it is very easy. But everyone gets a first time bonus in my eyes. Credits are rare with me
