the man in whom Tao acts without impediment does not bother with his own interests and does not despise others who do he does not struggle to make money and does not make a virtue of poverty. he goes his way without relying on others and does not pride himself on walking alone while he does not follow the crowd he wont complain of those who do rank and reward make no appeal to him; disgrace and shame do not deter him. he is not always looking for right or wrong always deciding 'yes' or 'no' -thomas merton [ the way of chuang tzu ]

"The highest type of ruler is one of whose existence the people are barely aware. Next comes the one whom they love and cherish. Next comes the one whom they fear. Next comes the one whom they despise and defy. When you are lacking in faith, Others will be unfaithful to you. The Sage is self-effacing and scanty of words. When his task is accomplished, and all things have been completed, All the people say, "We ourselves have achieved it!" - Lao Tzu, the Tao Teh Ching, verse 17
"Life and Liberty are intrinsically connected. The hand of Force can destroy, but never disjoin the two." - Jefferson
"Forgive them Lord, they know not what they do." - Jesus, as he was being crucified
All 3 of those quotes can make me cry if I really think about them.

Lao Tzu speaks of the Sage here, one who labours knowing he has been entrusted with a chore; but sage's are born and die with time and do not live to see there lifes work manifest the completion of all things.
In the spirit of reincarnation I can see how, upon this end, all people say, "We ourselves have achieved it!", if they believe that they lived as a sage in a past lifetime and accomplished the work they arrived for.
I'm trying to make sense of this...

How about this from Jim Morrison.
"I tell you this! No eternal reward shall forgive us now, for wasting the dawn"
You have been warned.

how does one 'waste the dawn' when there is always another dawn right around the corner?

I submit to you that there is no such thing as a wasted dawn, or a wasted life.
sometimes you learn a lot from bad trips.

My two favorite teachers...
Jesus:
* Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over all.
* Woe to the flesh that depends on the soul; woe to the soul that depends on the flesh.
* [The kingdom] will not come by watching for it. It will not be said, 'Look, here!' or 'Look, there!' Rather, the Father's kingdom is spread out upon the earth, and people don't see it.
Eckhart Tolle:
* Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have.
* The word enlightenment conjures up the idea of some superhuman accomplishment, and the ego likes to keep it that way, but it is simply your natural state of felt oneness with Being.
* The Truth is far more all-encompassing than the mind could ever comprehend. No thought can encapsulate the Truth.

some people are never troubled or astonished because they couldn't care less about ruling over all
Quote:
Woe to the flesh that depends on the soul; woe to the soul that depends on the flesh.
very true, but I would much rather invite woe to my flesh than invite woe to my soul. Flesh is temporary. Soul is eternal
Quote:

the kingdom is spread out all over the universe, not just planet Earth. "Overspecialize, and you breed in weakness." The earth looks more like a swamp everyday, so stagnant. so what are you waiting for? Build a spaceship that doesn't blow up, dammit!

"When you were One you became Two, now that you are Two, what will you do?"
"THe Kingdom of the Father is like A shepard with 100 sheep and had only counted 99. He left the 99 behind and sought out the lost sheep. After toiling he found the astray sheep and said to it, "I love you more than the 99."
"Cleave a piece of wood and you will find me, lift a stone and you will find me."
-Jesus
"I live, but I live not - Christ lives in me."
-St. Paul
"Once one has reached the point where they are pure awareness that happens to be embodied, death is like selling your old Ford - It's not a big deal."
-Ram Dass
"Love too is a furnace, and ego its fuel."
"There is no salvation for the soul except to fall in love."
"The lovers of God are but a thin veil on the Beloved."
"The life of this world is like something you have eaten in a dream."
"The lovers of God are like shade that yearns for sunlight. When the sun engulfs the shadow, it ceases to be"
-Jalaluddin Rumi
"Within us is an eternal treasure, waiting to be nurtured so that it might flourish. If this treasure does not grow and flourish, we are lost forever."
-Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan
-------------------- "Have you found the beginning, then, that you are looking for the end? You see, the end will be where the beginning is. Congratulations to the one who stands at the beginning: that one will know the end and will not taste death."
