I lost two jars this morning to this damned contam. What is/caused this?

The mycelium on one side of the jar looks awesome. I don't see any of the orange color except where it's up against the glass. Perhaps it's not contaminated at all. . .yet. What's in that jar? I see extra large verm. What's the rest? Also, that jar is 100% full. That won't allow you to shake, and it also is going to get whatever filter material you use wet, which will allow contaminants to colonize through the interior of your filter material. You shouldn't fill quart or liter jars more than 2/3 to 3/4 full. RR

It is just BRF and verm. Damn, I didn't know they weren't supposed to be full! Most of my jars probbaly don't stand much of a chance then? I couldn't find any contam that looked similar in the FAQs, and it led me to believe that it was a contam because there is an unpleasant and unusual smell. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, bad smells indicate contam. As far at your techniques, how did you miss the part on just about every instructional guide to growing, that you must have WIDE MOUTH or tapered jars??? The jars you have there, are used for grain, and they are filled 1/2 way or less. With out the tapered jars, you will not be able to slide the cake out of the jar after colonization

I realized that they wouldn't be able to slide out, I was just going to spoon them (not that that answers my question or anything!). I can't imagine that the shape of the jar would cause contams.

No, the shape won't cause contams, but if it stinks, it's bad. Quarts aren't used with brf because it takes forever to colonize and the brf is likely to spoil before full colonization. The growth on the other side looks good, so you might just let it rip and see what happens. If the orange spots grow or the stink gets worse, toss it out. In the meantime, start more jars with what you learned from that one. Get 1/2 pint wide mouth jars so the cake can just drop right out when it's ready. It takes a few tries to get it right. Hang in there. RR

I've lost a third jar now to this contam so there is obviously more of it lurking around in my incubator. Is there anything that I can do to prevent it from spreading?

Molds are usually introduced at inoculation. Bacteria can be introduced at inoculation OR from improper sterilization. Until you get the hang of it, always make a couple of extra jars up that you don't inoculate. If they contam, it's your sterilization procedure. If not, it's coming from the inoculation stage. By continuing to make blanks as Stamets calls them at each stage of the growing process, you can narrow down your contaminant problems to the exact step. RR

It seems that your water content is too high IMHO. try make it drier and use more inoculation liquid so it will spread all over the jar, coz its kind of big for brf. good luck.
