No longer have a pressure cooker and need to sterilize casing..
    #5683078 - 05/28/06 10:56 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I lost my pressure cooker yesterday. Couldn't get the walmart bitch closed so I threw it in a dumpster, it killed 3 of my wbs jars too. SO.. my cakes are nearly ready to be cased; and I need to know the best way to sterilize my 50peat/50verm casing. Boil? what? and for how long?

also:
50/50 on bottom, then mycelium, then 50/50 on top? is that how it works?

Pasteurize, don't sterilize casing material. Click the link right above your post to Cultivation FAQ, then click casing. All you need is right there.

Is this general good advice, or just for this situation? Thx!

Also, 50/50 on bottom, mycelium, 50/50 on top will work. I usually like to do about 1/4 inch of verm on the bottom, mycellium, then casing mix on top. I dont know anything though.  :syringe: :sun:

And open up my eyes, so i can see things as you do

If you're growing in trays, don't put casing material on the bottom. Use it on top only.

Compost and casing materials should be pasteurized in order to preserve the beneficial bacteria in the peat or compost/manure. They keep the compost or casing material 'alive' and therefore more resistant to molds.

I recently proved this to myself once again. I was cooking up a load of rye, but had one tray that needed patching. I was out of pasteurized 50/50, so I mixed some up and put it in a quart jar and pc'd it along with the other nine quarts of rye. Ten days later, I'm fighting cobweb mold in only one tray out of many, and it's that tray.

I sterilize mine and haven't seen any cobweb since I started sterilizing and storing it in quart jars .

Just ran an entire green house out , 13 casings , and only got the green on one . And it wasn't in the casing layer , It was along the bottom and side on the sub . Never had any cob web in any .

To each their own

Don't make me have to send the cobweb gods to your house to put a spell on you.  They're wicked around here.

LOL . No Thanks . You could send me some nice fresh salmon though

I can't remember the last time I saw cob web . I think it's due to the fact that I only use green houses now . All the FAE .

Still see the green a little bit though . I'm going to just start tossing everything after the third flush from now on

That's always a good plan. No, this tray with cobweb is in a large greenhouse that covers half a bedroom. It's the only one in there trying to grow cobweb. Peroxide 86's it for a day, but it comes back. If I wasn't craving the shaggy manes it has coming, I'd toss it out.
