Depth of hpoo substrate - affect yield?

I was wondering, when you spawn colonised grain to hpoo and put it in a container from which it will colonise and fruit, does the depth of your substrate effect yield? I was thinking that maybe a shallower substrate that will have a greater surface area would develope more pins. This may lead to less shrooms on later flushes but the first flush, i guess, is the one you want to get the most out of. Has anyone experimented with this or noticed any difference in yield in their experience?

ive gone as shallow as 2" , maybe you could go even thiner but IMO i wouldn't. less poo you have the less nutes your mushies have to eat, meaning smaller mushrooms and less flushes. you should try to get between 4"-6" depth of substrate w/ 1/4" - 3/8" deep casing layer. some ppl say your casing layer should be as thick as 25% of your substrate depth, but ive tried this with bad results. i just go w/ around 3/8" thick casing layer. but thats just im sure someone else will disagree.. hope it helps ya out some..

Thanks for the tips I was thinking if i had 5lbs of hpoo, wether spawning into a shallow but not too shallow a container would let it develope more pins than having the same amount of hpoo in a deeper container

Don't spread it too thin. Best results come from a thicker substrate. More square inches of surface area will give more pins, but you won't have the substrate depth to support them and you'll have a ton of aborts, thus lowering total yield. RR
