Oh snap I just saw the pimp-est solar still idea in this survival handbook.
Dig a circular hole in humid soil, and put some saran wrap( or plastic sheet) over the hole, hold the ends of the circular plastic sheet over the hole with rocks, and then put soil around it, to make it airtight and secure. Put a rock on top of the plastic creating a crater( falling short just of the cup), and a collection cup. The sun heats the hold through the plastic, condensation gathers and dips into the cup, plastic is removed and cup of water consumed.

I'm not sure what the silver does. Distant memory from the Boy Scouts. Silver iodine can be use the same way. A few drops in your canteen.

In some situations, maybe. But in most situations, " The shit's " would mean stay by the river for a week, till your body fights off the virus, or die on the trail, getting to the next river. Because of the natures of liquid body excretions, it would be recommended to drink from a wild river ONLY if you can chill out there for a bit, want to risk possible death, AND have a food supply to keep your body strong while it adjusts.
Distilling urine is a good method for water survival. As someone mentioned, a PC is perfect for this.

Yeah, like ten years later, and only for two months out of the year Luckily, the woods have 'fruit trees' that have been growing and are providing max potential right away. This is the benefit of starting in an old established forest, instead of a dessert for survival.

Charge our cell phones? I don't see the use for electricity either.
Ok I agree there would not be a need for electricity. But what you are not understanding is that electricity is already there. We are making plans to use resources that exist.Well electricity exists naturaly. Why not use it to make things easier?I mean sure you wouldnt be able to or even need it if your going solo or with a few people. But when the large communitys arive with around 50-100 people, electricity would come in handy.
Just because it seems like a tool of modern man(which we are all trying not to be like in the event of a global catastrophe) it is still a a natural thing that can be harnessed and used to help us acomplish things.
Everything that functions off of electricity is made in a factory. A generator would be nice until everything we have that runs on electric has broken, then it would be somewhat useless, though certainly could be used to heat water and start fires, probably the two best arguments for pursuing an electricity program.

u could make a dam to make electric coffe grinder work or just use the dam to make a water driven mill. electricity could be shortcut in this example and others i expect but im too tired to think of more. what do we really need that isnt done with hand tooling? or want even? cd players are junk and break quickly. some will still work though. we could run computers off solar to keep info and get back to this thread

Might save your own. Everyone with an eye to read, let them read. If the system fails, knowledge really will be power.

We could use electricity to consistently make fire, was my point.

2012. Yeah, that's what they're saying. That's only 6 years, not too bad of a wait at all!
I bet in 2011 the Pub will be going nuts!

Instead of needing electricity for fire, one could pack a magnified glass, for solar hits or sparks. During storms or cloud cover, wooden sex devices can be rubbed back and forth to produce the necessary flames to 'get high or stay warm'.

I think fire is a primary consideration.
A fire should stay kindled at all times at the main camp with a full time fire-tender.

It wouldn't be a virus you get from a stream. It would likely be bacteria or other microbial life. And it won't kill you. We once live off of streams as a matter of course. The human form isn't that delicate.
Also, you can drink you urine once through. It must be fresh. If it sits, it turns to ammonia and will make you sick.
