Camp? Main? Way to draw attention buddy. At the start? stay low. Dark. Don't shine a light on yourself. Aa fire in the dark is possible without light going off, just get close to someone you love. In the day, fire is not as much of an issue, but much easier to start in the woods.

Fire steel wool and a 9V battery pocket lint or lint from your sock and an empty bic lighter
wood good for fire by friction (rubbing stick together) bass, yucca, mullein, poplar. Soft woods.

There are certain caves which would provide enough room for a regulation NFL football game 3000 feet underground accessible only through 3 hours of crawling through various twists and turns. An underground community could live there.

We are talking about the end, going to live in the woods. Most likely that will be cause by a nuclear explosion. Not only will this extremely contaminate the water, but even without it, I would NOT RECOMMEND anyone drinking from a river in or a around the city of Atlanta. People die from it, every year. Salmonella and worse. Way out in but fucking nowhere, sure, Drink, Live. In Florida, there is a Springs called Ponce De Leon, in a spring, you can dive ten feet, into the sub level of the water, and drink freely. Just gulp as much as you can underwater, with perfectly blue and cool clean 67 degree water, year round. However, here in GA, no matter how deep you dive into the river and drink, you're still at high risk.

Also, you can drink you urine once through. It must be fresh. If it sits, it turns to ammonia and will make you sick.
Good to know, especially when I wanna trip harder and longer, and pull it old school like the ancient shamans. That, or need to survive .

Do you think a nomadic existence would be better or a stationary one in a compound or something

For a fire that is small and gives little to no smoke. This requires close attention. you need to feed the fire consistently with very small dry twigs. Once it is big enough to cook, boil water, or what ever, you can let if burn. To put it out, spread the coals or (for no trace) fill in the hole you dug for it.

A cave is a good idea. You could store dried food there. It would keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. If I remember correctly a cave or any underground opening like that, keeps a constant temp of around 62 degrees.I could be wrong though. It may also be different temps for different locations. But I am quite sure its 62F

Another important thing would be militia. Depending on the type of shit that will hit the fan, a trained militant force will be needed to hold and control an area, moving or stationary.
This is the kind of thing you would need to start now or become a part of an existing one.

For purifying water, if you can find a piece of plastic, a cup and a pot. Water goes in the pot, the cup goes in the middle of the pot. The plastic drapes over the pot with a small stone in the middle to create an inverted cone so the water can evaporate and condense on the plastic, then drip into the cup.
That's like the design for the solar still. There's a hole in the ground with a cup in the middle and a plastic cone aiming at the cup for water to drip into the cup as it condenses and runs down into it.
Vegetation and urine can be added around the cup in the hole to be condensed as the sun beats on the plastic.

A Rocky mountain natural spring spewing forth crystal clear water suitable for immediate drinking is a clever thing to be close to.

That one I mentioned has them too. There's a river flowing through it at one point and you have to wade thru. There's a constant year round temperature too, though I can't remember what it is it's comfortable.
