That's an interesting question. You always see clones on agar. Why not just skip the agar and go straight to grains? I'm sure it's been done, I'm just wondering why you don't see or hear about it it much.

Clones have been successfully transferred to grains. The reason agar is usually used is because it's really hard to get a clone contaminant free. Agar lets you transfer actual mycelium away from contaminants. You'll likely go through a lot of grain jars, but if you do enough, one of them will work. Young, rapidly growing fruits from the first flush are best suited for cloning. RR

I tried that tek with the brf paste. didnt work and got dried out really fast.
two days ago i did some grain - poo, one quart is about 30% in 2days. Im transfering about 20 half pints of brf to quarts of poo.
also, you can clone a shroom on cardboard. just use a small amount of tissue and pit on a piece of cardboard. ripped it down the middle to form 2 halfs of cardboard. soak in water with tiny bit of h2o2. put in glovebox or something similar, than transfer that colonzied piece to spawn/subsrtate of your choice.

Agar is wrapped with parafilm to prevent contamination, not to prevent drying. You won't be growing on agar for more than a week or two anyway, so drying out isn't a problem. RR

There is a tek in one of stamets books for getting clean clones and prints. Basically you just sterilize a inch or two of grains in the bottom of a 2 quart jar, inoculate it, let it colonize and let it fruit in the jar. That way the jar can be taken into a glove box and the mushroom specimen stays pretty much contaminant free.
Popcorn makes good spawn it just needs to be simmered about twice as long as wbs.
IMO newbs would most likely have a better chance of getting moisture content right on popcorn than wbs because its easier to drain and all that.

im going to try the "fahlstar popcorn isolation/myc syringe" first, i already made two popcorn jars(filled 1/5 full)
im also going to try two brf agar jars
so in total i should have 4 substrains to choose from. if the brf don't work i will have 2 substrains to work with.
