Anyone ever saved a contamed cake? updated with PICS ADDED
    #5679863 - 05/27/06 08:57 AM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, 1st of all I know that this is not recommended. I got home from work last night. Noticed a little green in the top of a jar. I said fuck it and put on my breather mask, and in a sterile room opened the jar. It is like 80% col. with a fucking contam spot the size of a dime. I scooped it out. then I scooped out about another inch of myc. to be safe. Then took the (half cake) out and rinsed it under water for about 10 mins. Then I rolled it in dry verm and put it in a pmp setup (this is in a seperate room, not with my other cakes). This morning the cake seems to be re-vitalized. Under the verm it is turning nice and white again. What do you think? I will post pics when I get home.

Sounds fine so far but it will probably get the mold in the future (maybe near future.)

You did everything good so far: sterilized room, removing mold and more to be safe, and i'm sure rinsing didn't hurt.

And if it pins and fruits the mushrooms will still be edible, molds aren't toxic to humans so don't worry about that. Good luck dude tell us if it works or not

I will post pics. This is going to be my experiment to keep me occupied while the others colonise.

These 2 are pics of the green mold. You might not be able to see it. It was hard to get a good shot of the top of the jar. You can see where the green shit is fighting off the myc.

These are the pics about 20 hours after I cleaned the cake and roled it in verm. It ate through the verm quick! Thats a good sign right? Should I put some more verm on it and sray it or just let it be? Its in perfect fruiting conditions. 73-77f and 98% humitidy.

It just might work!

and no, there isnt any green shit on the cake as of now. I know the pics are a little dark but I didnt want to take the cake into an un-sterilized room. I also sprayed it with some water/h2o2 solution to help fight off any cobweb.

One thing I did when my casing got contaminated as all fuck was put a tiny bit of clean mycelium in some sterilized moist cardboard. it seems really ghetto, but it is colonizing the cardboard. I read a tek here about that and slightly modified it. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't friut, however.

Odds are, your cake will become contaminatied. I' drunk as fuck rivht now but maybe it will survive, prorbay not sorry man. Let it live until it gets colors or some gross ass smell. If yiou have a clean house then it might be fine but if it wasnt fully colonized then it might be fucked. PM me if you want to PEACE

Here the cake is on the night of the 30th and appearently doing ok?
What do you guys think? Please let me know. The fruiting temp ranges between 74-80, humidity is 98-99%, it is in a pmp set up, and the light is 16-on and 8-off. Is there a chance of this thing fruiting?
The cake is very white even though the pics might look darker. Thanks!

Oh yeah, forgot to add that I will take some better pics in a better lit area when the cake is a little more stable. I will also update this with pics every 2 days.

now on the 3rd, and its pinning. Nothing major, but not bad for a half of a cake that was saved from a tiny mold spot. There are probably about 35 little ones on it so far, I hope to see more tomorrow!
Why is this cake so rhizy? Is it because I had to birth it early?

 Thanks Guys!

The green is caused by the spores of the trich fungus. The mycelium of the contam is white and can be hard to spot amongst the mushroom mycelium. By cutting out the area around the green bit you're only taking out the area where the spores are. :mushroom2:

The cake is not green anymore. It might look like it in the pictures but it is completly white. Plus, its pinning all over now. I don't think contam is an issue any more. I will post more pics tonight.

Sweet Pin set..Someone is going to be enjoying themself tomorrow... I've got a current cake that survived a contam. Its first flush was weak, but it was also over grown and has since been cased. Should pin in two more days!

I started this thread earlier about a jar of mine that was showing a bit of mold near the top, which really upset me because it was SO close to full colonization. However, inspired by your story, Holesnype, I decided to give it a try on my jar. I birthed it, cut out the uncolonized and contaminated portion (plus some extra to be safe). I'm now dunking it overnight in the fridge and will be putting it into a coke bottle terrarium tommorrow. Hopefully it will go as well as yours did.

That's fine to do if it's your only grow and you don't plan to pursue the hobby further. If you plan to grow more in the future, I would never recommend handling a substrate with a trichoderma bloom anywhere near your home, clothes or yourself. You'll simply release too many contaminant spores into your growing area that will bite your butt later. It's too easy to start a new substrate and practice until you learn proper sterile technique. Molds are introduced at inoculation, so screwing around with contaminated product insures that there will be more contaminants in the air next time you work than last time.

Ok, I clicked your link and it appears your jar has bacterial contamination. That can be verified by the smell when you broke it up. If it had a very pleasant fresh mushroom smell, it was ok. If it had a sweet or sour, or other garbage smell, it isn't going to help.
