Hey gang,
I'm just working on my first grow. Things look okay, and I'm getting some little sprouts of mushrooms. I can see wispy white stuff on many of the cakes. I assume that is just myecelium.
I'm about to add a bubbler system to my incubator as I'll be away for a bit. But I'm worried about the noise. Any suggestions re: making the air pump silent? I need to figure out how to sound insulate...
Do my cakes look okay? Thanks for the feedback, and big thanks to the shroomery.

dunk & roll!
i'd take all of those that still have no pins and D&R them ASAP! it makes a world of diffrance...
as for air pumps... i dunno... it's aint THAT loude! with a bubble stone it will probably make less noize (for the bubbling... the pump still makes the same noize)
search around i'm pretty sure people have discussed this at leangth befor and if there are any creative solutions they had probably been mentioned befor!
welcome to the shroomery and keep this thread updated with pics we never get tired of watching cakes/casings pin and friute

Hey guys,
Thanks for the feedback.
Should I really "dunk and roll"? I'll do a search and see what that really means.
I think the air pump is just too loud. I may try some kind of cool mist humidifier instead, although I don't know if it can take enough water to last for 8 days...
Thanks for the help!

Is it just me or does that look like mould on the top of those cakes?

I'm just finishing up my 1st grow using PF cakes like you. I would definitely dunk & roll. I d&r'd half my cakes and the other half I did not, and the ones which were rolled produced more and bigger mushrooms. dunk & roll just means rolling your cakes in dry vermiculite, then misting the cakes until the verm. is moist. Alternatively you could moisten the verm first, then roll the cakes in it, but it doesn't stick as good that way. I know there is a "dunk tek" somewhere, but I don't have the link. Try doing a seach for dunk tek.

Hi,
Okay, I've checked out the dunk tek. Will give it a try with the cakes that haven't pinned... I figure I'll soak 'em for 12 hours, then roll in dry vermiculite?
Re: the cakes, yeah, there is white fuzz on the top, but I was thinking that that was the myecelium, and not mold. But I'd appreciate a second opinion. Note that I ran a control jar (that I didn't inoculate), and that is uncontaminated, so I'm still optimistic that the fuzz is myecelium and not mold (not the fuzz was also there when I first opened the jars...). But yeah, maybe the cakes have gotten a bit dry and need rehydration.
I'm going to see if I can find a cool-mist humidifier, mainly for the air circulation, and because it'll be quiter than the aquarium pumps, which seem to me to be just too loud (esp. once I put them inside a plastic box with an air filter).
Thanks!
