Newbie cake and case using the same jar
    #5678377 - 05/26/06 08:50 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Everybody knows that newbies should start out with pf cakes. Well I thinks you might as well try casing also while your at it. The day before you birth your cakes buy some bird seed or chicken scratch and some extra lids for your jars. there are several teks about preparing it on here somewhere. I just soaked mine overnight after removing the floaters and then simmered it for about 20-30 minutes and rinsed them off. Pressure cooked them in quart jars with no open space and no holes in the lid. Then take your extra jar lids and put some big holes on top (make sure the jagged metal points up) Cut some tyvek squares a little bigger than your lids and stack them one square one lid etc... wrap them in foil and pressure cook them also. When you birth the cakes immediately pour the birdseed into the empty cake jars and seal them in with the lids/tyvek. All the mycelia that is stuck to the glass will start growing on the seeds. I'm sure you should do this in a sterile environment but I didn't and 12 out of 12 fully colonized in 8 days @ 78 degrees. (shake them daily) then you can either case them or save them as back up in case a meteor hits your cake farm. Either way its good practice and better than just washing out the jars.
P.S. You can get tyvek for free from the Post Office.

interesting idea FBB

you don't even have to ask for envelopes. they're always sitting out in the front area. Priority and Urgent envelopes == tyvek. you can even double check them to make sure it says 'Dupont Tyvek' on the side with the flap.
