thinking about getting a cellular modem for my laptop.

i travel so damn much, that it really makes sense.
the question i have is weather i should go with verizon or cingular...
im thinkint verizon would be better, as they offer high speed in major cities (aound 700k) and still have "national access" most other places, which is only 70-80k, slow, but most always avaliable and still not dial up.
does anyone here use or have a cellular modem for their laptop?

Well I don't have either so take my opinion with a grain of salt . But I have thought about it since wireless internet anywhere would be kind of cool.
EvDO is the current generation cellular standard in the US. It allows the greatest bandwidth which is why I recommend it. You already alluded to it with your comment about 700k in cities (up to 3.1Mb is possible). All the new laptops with wireless internet have internal EvDO cards.

still not sure what to get. sprint is far out of the question and it is between cingular and verizon.
both have 3g networks and comparable speeds, but locations vary. its looking like cingular might have more coverage, and as i allready havd a contract with them im can get it added on without a new 2 year contract.
but im still not quite sure...... i cant seem to bring up any cingular coverage maps...

Ive had both, both sucked for my uses. I live in the country and dont have access to broadband.
I tried Cingular first. Slow as fuck and would CONSTANTLY not connect, or Id be in the middle of a session and the damn thing would CONSTANTLY disconnect. I dumped it and they wanted over $200 for a disconnect fee. I bitched and bitched and then bitched some more but finally they waived the fee (after ~3 months of complaints about the service and eventually the bill form me).
I then tried Verizon. I was assured by the salesman that if I was not satisfied with the service I could return the card within 2 weeks with absolutly no charge. I tried it and it was slow as fuck, just like cingular but at least it always worked (unlike cingular). I wasnt satisfied because quite frankly net-freakin-zero was faster and a whole lot cheaper so I decided to nix the verizon connection. No-prob at first. I returned the card and got a full refund of ~120. A month later I get a fucking bill. I call Verizon asking why Ive been billed and they say oh, because you used the service. I tell them that I was assured I wouldnt be billed if I returned the product within the set time limit, which I did. They didnt care and sent me bill after bill. Finally I just paid the 40 something dollars just to be done with the fuckers.
From my experience Id say go with verizon (read the fine print though), it might be slow as shit (as is cingular) but at least it always works. I live in the country though so I understood I wouldnt get the blazing fast speeds but their advertised slower speeds should have been faster then a dialup but they werent. I checked the coverage areas before I bought too so there was no problem there. Good luck to you, maybe its a lot better in a major city?

yeah verison has high speed broad band access in most of the cities im in, but also has the national slow ass acess most everywhere else.
shame neither work in nevada where i work these days
but yeah verison will charge you for the sservice you used, prorated i believe for the time you used it, despite waiving most of the other fees.
i have a big business plan coming to head in the next few weeks, and the price of this is getting worked for my mobile office

Us Cellular has a Seria card... works on CDMA technology, not EVDO.
they also have a Kyocera version in Peg product testing right now to be available to the public soon... Air cards work great and work wherever you get a data signal on your cell phone. (it's not everywhere)
