That's just silly.

Does the entire natural world seem to be "living in peace" to you?

I mean yes, animals don't make war, but it's do or die out there.

And before we wrote, with our opposable thumbs, we were apes. And apes can be just as violent as humans.

Not gorillas though, they're friendly fuckers.

All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

Apparently since WW2 there have been six days when there wasn't some kind of war/conflict going on.

Fights and shit obviously will always be going on, but not the organised mass murder of each other.

Human beings are animals. We have always been brutal and war-crazy. The idea of "primitive man" who lived in peace came from Rousseau I think, but he was only speculating. The idea of primitive man is needed aesthetically to support the ideal of some kind of communal existence in the future. Very 19th century. But look at WW I and II. Look at the Taiping Rebellion. Look at Vietnam. Look at Iraq.

We will never live in peace, but war has a way of bringing out millenialist and messianic beliefs as a means of escaping present-day horrors. Of course, in order to have Revelation/Kingdom of God you must have a Garden of Eden. In order to have a hope for Utopia you must cling to a supposed golden age in the past. We bookend the present with fantasies disguised as history or prophecy, with the idea that the former proves the latter, and with the assumption that the former is factual.

But it isn't. Sorry.

No; truth, being alive, was not halfway between anything. It was only to be found by continuous excursions into either realm, and though proportion is the final secret, to espouse it at the outset is to insure sterility.

Only connect...

yeah sorry to burst your idealistic bubble

but humans in the past where probably in no way living in peace

it was a daily game of survival

however on a lighter note if we survive the shit known as the 21st century, maybe in the FUTURE humans will some day live in peace
