who really dunks after colonization?
    #5676035 - 05/26/06 05:46 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I was told after colonization just go ahead and put in terrarium. Is it vital that I dunk? He also told me to dunk after 1st flush. Opinions greatly needeed here. Thanks

I know dunking in betweed flushed is recommended to rehydrate your cake and induce pinning.
Some ppl say to dunk b4 first flush and some say it isnt nescesary, im not really sure either. But probably dunking b4 the first flush would be benificial as it will replace the water that has been used up during myc colonisation.

Dunking isn't necessary but it will increase your yield, really.

The first flush is usually the best flush. Why wouldn't you want to do something to help you get the most out of that flush?

The ones that say it isn't necessary don't know the reason we dunk apparently or are just ignorant IMHO. During the substrate run cakes shrink that why they come out of the jars so easy now this shrinking may not seem like much to the newbies that say dunking isn't necessary but they are quite depleted of water. Don't listen to them they are just spouting off and have no clue. Simply do a side by side and see what fully hydrated cakes can yield I'm mean thats one of the things we strive for is yield right? There is a noticeable difference and well worth a simple dunk!
No disrespect Sinthetic of course dunking isn't necessary but to myself it is a must.

Appropriate dunking time: approx 18 hrs, correct?

Room temperature water or cold?

You can dunk anywhere from 12-24 hours. After 48 hours the cake will die. You do not have to refrigerate when dunking, but cool temps can help hold off contams. I dunk cakes at birth and after every flush. With dunking, d-e casing and rolling in vermiculite, I have gotten 6 flushes out of PF cakes. Some have reported more. GL.

And dunk each cake in its own container--if there are contams, at least you can isolate them.

Well, Do you think if I was going to case 2 pint jars of brf, i should dunk'em? Because they took 4 weeks to get all the way colonized... I think that they have started to dry out and well, i just want to get the most shrooms from this grow!

should you be dunking casings before the first flush? if you spawned it to substrate, that has extra moisture, but the myc also has to colonize the substrate.

maybe dunk for a couple hours before casing? Never heard that done, just between flushes.

That makes sense, you could dunk em overnight in the jar they grew in.

wondering if you'd need to dunk AGAIN after it colonizes the substrate?

well, i am not gonna spawn them to anything... Misting the casing layer would work, but can you dunk the casing after the first flush?

Frank, you are very welcome. As far as dunking cakes you are going to use in a casing, you do not really need to dunk (maybe 4 hours at most). Once you break the cakes up, it's not so dense and can absorb moisture more easily--through consistent misting. Roger Rabbit has a good tek for dunking casings, but there again you only need a few hours of submersion in water. Some don't dunk casings at all. GL.
