jar airflow
    #5672830 - 05/25/06 12:42 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I was just reading the flaming post about taping jars and how they colonise much faster untaped as air exchange can then occur.
For inoculation i had plasters over the holes in my jars which i added some preoxide to for sterility. Today i took those of to maximise airflow and was wondering:
Since they are plastic jars, i can kindof push the lid down which pushes air out and then take the pressure off which allows air to enter. I was wondering if this will make a difference in colonisation time as more O2 will be available to reach the mycelium.

Not necessary, just tip the jar upside down. CO2 is heavier than O2 and will "fall out" of the jar.

ah, ok
I may need to sit some of my jars upside down anyway as the bottom is having trouble colonising due to the higher mositure content.

its very important to know if these jars are whole grains or PF??

for grains you really must have something covering the holes ie-MP tape
(unless using tyvek)

for pf there is no need to over the holes as you have a protective layer
of verm
