Want to find some edibles. Anyone help id?
    #5671499 - 05/25/06 03:37 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, last season was all about the actives , now I would like to find some non-active edibles.  I walk through a big park everyday to work, so there are heaps of mushrooms around, but I don't really know what any of them are.  If anyone can help out that would be cool.

This is the first one.

a. Habitat: Australia, Victoria. Grassy area in park.

b. Characteristics of the gills: Fine and very small spacing.  Pink.  I think it's adnexed or free.

d. Characteristics of the stem: Central, Seem fatter in the middle. Fibrous.
Small mushroom:15mm by 40mm. Large mushroom: 15mm by 60mm.

e. Characteristics of the cap: Pretty much convex, though pretty rough.  Dry.  Margin seems to roll inwards.  Very quick color change to yellow when handled.  Brown on top (sun burnt??)  Otherwise white.
Small mushroom: 40mm diameter, 30mm height.  Lage mushroom: 65mm diameter, 45mm height.

f. Spore print color: brown

g. Color that the mushroom bruises: Yellow.

h. Scent of mushroom: All smell the same to me?

There are also remnants of a veil, very noticeable.

Caps.

Gills.

Section. You can see the yellow bruising here.

Group shot.

Ok the second mushroom.

a. Habitat: Australia, Victoria. Grassy area.

b. Characteristics of the gills: Widely spaced, and between each gill that reaches the stem, there is one that doesn't (lamellulae?).  Tan colored. Adnexed.

d. Characteristics of the stem: Fibrous, tough.
Small mushroom: 3mm by 40mm.  Large mushroom: 4mm by 50mm.

e. Characteristics of the cap: Hydrophanous when wet, Dry when not wet .  Noticible difference when I walked into work (raining) and home from work (sunny).  Umbonate.  Tan, deeper color in middle.  Striated margins when wet.

f. Spore print color:

g. Color that the mushroom bruises: None.

h. Scent of mushroom:  Dunno.

Caps.

Gills.

Gill attachment. It's a bit blurry, crappy camera...

Group shot.

Got owned when i tried to upload the final picture of the spore prints, but oh well.

My guesses are, mushroom 1 is agaricus xanthodermus, but I have never seen the brown stuff on the cap in pictures of them before...?
The second one is marasmius oreades?  Fits perfectly with this little book of mine, but next time i'll be picking to eat them so I wanted to make sure.  Anyone tried them before??

Anywho, if anyone can help that would be great.

Cheers,
squirrel

Definately got Marasmius oreades.....if youve never had it ....in for a treat....unsurpassed and usually plentiful when showing.....a good trait on those is that tough stem though some of the doggid ones you have there in the pics can be weeks old at times just keep swellin back up with the downpoors after being completely dried out and these and many fungi using this process being able to rehydrate and resume normal daily function and cycle through this many times due to a very interesting carb which of course has gained much attention and study over the years.....this of course lends to a nice shelf life in the dryed form....be sure all are Oreades you have there.....

and you definately got Agaricus xanthodermus there......primary with Agaricus other than stains is smell.....what they mean by that especially with Agaricus is first thing you do when you find it is nic a small piece from base of stem where it had met the ground and rub between your fingers and smell.....fingers and where nicked....like to watch peoples faces.....you will know in most cases immediately if a toxic Agaricus from that nasty hit you in the nose blah ! All the toxic Agaricus have this unforgettable smell at the base although not everyone can sense it tho Ive never seen one that I couldnt distincly smell it personally yet

along with the nic on Xanthodermus and Meleagris(Praeclaresquamosus) is the immediate bright yellow bruise reaction......then rub the outside rim (margin) of the cap.....if immediately bruises bright yellow this immediately indicates Xanthodermus and no others....if it doesnt but does at the base immediately when nicked...... then Meleagris or couple variant species

other poisonous species have the smell when base is nicked but sometimes weak and the bruising can be highly variable(may take hours) to not showing at all in some populations

no Agaricus are deadly and all the toxic species regularly eaten by many people but this can put you in the hospital

if you have trouble sensing the foul smell ...it is greatly exaggerated in cooking

Xanthodermus is commonly buried in scalyness (squamules) on the cap or can be smooth

Xanthodermus can be found in pretty much any habitat......cracks in side walks, pastures, yards, dirt, schools/parks, lawns, grassy, planters, high elevation native situations, you name it.....

good calls on those IDs

I recommend drying the M oreades out. I don't care for them fresh but drying and storing them in an air tight container greatly enhances the flavour IMO

Discard the stems too, they're very fibrous. All you want is the caps

Excellent in ham and cheese omelets! :drooling:

Thanks guys.

Yeah I can't really pick up the smell of the xanthodermus; I read somewhere that it smells like phenol?  I work in a medical lab, and I use 100% phenol in DNA extractions, and I can't smell any real similarity between the 2.  THe phenol in the lab fucking stinks though.  Maybe I'll compare the xanthodermus to an edible field mushroom when i find one and see if i can tell the difference.

Hooray! At least I have one edible then.  I might go for a look for some good ones tomorrow and have them for breakfast on sunday.  Ham and cheese omelettes sounds pretty damn good, might jsut ahve to do that.

thanks again,
squirrel

The odor of A. xanthodermus is also described by some people as "metallic", or "like library paste". In a general sense any Agaricus that has an unpleasant odor should be avoided.

Happy mushrooming!
