panaeolus question
    #5670952 - 05/25/06 12:01 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

i found some shrooms at my friends house in maine. Yesterday, growing in horse manure. He has two horses and there are a few growing outside the barn. They look extremely close to this mushroom here: http://www.myco-vaud.ch/albums/smv2001/aar.thumb.jpg

Im almost 100% it is in the panaeolous family but i can't decide if it is Panaeolus papilionaceus or Panaeolus subbalteatus .I'm almost 100% sure it is one of the two. Now my question to this messageboard is.... are both Panaeolus subbalteatus and papilionaceus active? i wont assume anything , im no professional, i'll add pictures as soon as i can get some but for now id just like to know if those two species are active or not. If somoene could answer that for me it would be greatly appreciated!

if they looked like that pic, they are prob not subbs.  Subbalteatus have this pretty multi coloured, often rings around the cap- dark near the edge and becoming lighter near the top.  I do not know whether papilionaceus is active, but the picture above looks far closer to pap. than the subb. species.  If they have rings, be sure they aren't Psathyrella..... I am trying to distinguish between the two (panaeolus or psathyrella) at the moment, with my own finds.  :undecided:

Gooood luck!

Panaeolus subbalteatus usually is but some so weak they cant be considered active

Panaeolus papilionaceus-campanulatus-sphinctrinus-retirugis complex some collections may be weakly active or NOT active

No Panaeolus are poisonous and many are not active at all

EDIT: just noticed Cure replied....ya would say probably not Subbs either
