What's the easiest Gourment Mushroom for Home Cultivation?
    #5670585 - 05/24/06 10:22 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I have a couple of questions here...

- What's the easiest gourmet mushroom I can grow at home without too much hassle? I wanted to grow shitake mushrooms, but after reading a bit about it I still can't get my head around it all. Is there any gourmet mushroom I can grow in a similar method to P.Cubensis??? Seems weird they are so easy and edible, legal ones are so hard.

- Can I make a mycelium syringe of an edible species in the same was I do for P.Cubenis? That is, can I inoculate some honey-water with a tiny piece of sterile mushroom flesh and mcyelium will grow???

Thanks.

If you search in this section there's a thread about Lentinus edodes (Shiitake) on cakes. I don't remember if common PF cakes, but yes, you can, and you can also make a syringe then you can inoculate the honey tek (i've never done a honey tek with shiitake but i believe it works )

I'm not sure if this fits into your definition of "Gourmet", but oyster mushrooms are very easy to grow. I've never heard of them being grown on PF cakes, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. They like to grow on cellulose. (wood, cardboard, paper, etc.)

You wouldn't mind showing me an example of this would you? I need to figure out how to do it.

Thanks for all your great replies! Ohmatic, great link and teks!

Just a few more questions...

(1) Can I just get a spore-print from store-bought shitake mushrooms and use that to inoculate the honey-water?

(2) Will the honey water inoculation work if I just get a bit of mushroom flesh and put that in the honey water (as opposed to a spore syringe)

Thanks everyone for reading and replying to my thread!

im here to help

as for store bought mushies, id recommend cloning them.

extract tissue with sterile tool from inside of mushroom and transfer to agar,
then dump the colonised (contam free) agar wedge in your liquid culture or directly
use it to inoculate grain spawn.

as for directly dumping tissue in the water, i recomment a brief h2o2 dunk before
to grill of possible contams that landed on it.

i advise use of a glovebox/still air environment.
