briefly, does WBS do well to case, or is it mainly a spawning substrate?

Is it possible to case WBS? I was thinking about using bird seed next grow, but manure in general is unavaiable where I live.

I've done it before.
Make sure you dunk your cakes before you case them.
I took my sub. straight out the jars and just straight cased the WBS.
One of the best pinsets i even had...Unfortunaly, once they grew about 2 inches, they all dropped veil and stopped growing =/.
I'm pretty sure it was due to a lack of water in the substrate itsself.

Even dunking cakes, would it hold enough water? Can't WBS be mixed with some vermiculite when casing?

WBS can be cased just fine. Just use a 50/50 verm/coco coir mix as the casing layers, and make sure you do the WBS right. Soak it for 16-20 hours, and then simmer it for 25 mins or once the kernals start to pop take it off immediatly. Then rinse, let it dry for about 30 mins, and jar it up. If you do this the WBS should have enough moisture, just remember to dunk it after every flush, you should get 3-4 flushes.
The bottom casing layer should be about 3/4" to 1" (inch) and the top casing layer should be about 1/2". The substrate layer should be about 1"-1½", some people like it even thicker than that but there is a point where there is too much substrate.
One question that I have had lately though is this. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to mix some brown rice flour in with the WBS before PC'ing it. Like 5-15%. My friend said that BRF works great if you just mix it in with WBS but I havnt actually tried that out yet, does anyone have any info on this? It seems like the BRF would hold moisture better and I know it has some nutes that WBS might not have.

wbs is not a good substrate.
casing on the bottom is pointless in my opinion.
do yourself a favor... do not use wbs as a substrate alone.
You don't need h/poo, spawn to coco coir.
do not case with coco coir, it has as many nutes as h/poo. use coco coir as a substrate, case with peat and verm.
no coir? no poo? use straw.
I strongly suggest not using your wbs as substrate.
sorry hfactor, but I disagree with your methods. what happened to Gnostic will happen to you too. is that what you really want??
