cakes in jars bruising?
    #5668432 - 05/24/06 11:44 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I read a while back about cakes that are colonizing can bruise. I have been colonizing some texas cakes for about a month now, almost there, finally. Earlier when they were a quarter to a third colonized a chunk of my mycellium turned a light, very light blue tint. I thought that it was going to be mold but it never spread and the mycellium has been growing fine ever since, exept for the presence of some minimal myc. piss. My question is what can I do to prevent this, the bruising (if that is what it is)and the myc piss.. It never happened to my B+ and my tasmanian is doing awesome. Thank you for all the help.

Have any pics to post? I'm still new but I've never run across mycelia 'bruising'.

bruising occours from touching (not relevent here) and drying out in most cases.

Yours was probably too dry.

How does drying initiate bruising?

thats what i was thinkng, the cakes seem to have shrunk a little in the jars, they have been colonizing for a month now. My tasmanian is almost caught up to them and they were a week and a half behind them. thaks for the help, Is a wetter mix of BRF and verm the only way to prevent htis problem in the future?

I'm not quite sure, but I think it's okay if cakes bruise a little - although it's usually a result of low humidity or rough handling. Maybe the moisture content in that particular jar is off.
