Mainly because it isn't needed and serves very little if any advantage. A HPoo substrate provides it's own micro-environment. Unless of course, casing is reccomended for the specific strain your doing, eg Pans.

None... unless your doing Pans or some edible that requires it.

If you don't use casing, I suggest wax paper until the pins push it up and away.
The wax paper will create a microclimate for the substrate. No added water holding benefit, but better than nothing at all.

wax paper works with a bulk substrate of horse poo without a casing layer...when fruiting Cubensis.
but so does nothing at all.
you just get a better pin set with wax paper or a casing layer.
some of my largest fruits(cubensis) have been on bulk substrate of horse poo without using a casing layer or anything at all.

in a mono tub casing is just a big waist of time, you can turn over more shrooms without one.
This is a second flush of brazils, it got too hot in the house cause the air was off and the darn thing got a little bit of fermentation there where i tor a chunk out because it wouldnt colinize.

This was the first flush, i know everyone has seen this pik a million and a half times but its my fav.
