Quick Q- PERLITE....Sterile???
    #5662603 - 05/23/06 12:27 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I baked it for an hour on a pizza pan at 350, boought it from wal-mart. Doesnt it come sterile too? But any ways, after cooking, and wetting for terrium, i noticed as i was pouring out a little water, so the levels were right, that the water was slightly brownish, like dirt...

sure, it's sterile enough. But add some Hydrogen Peroxide to your water for shits and giggles.

A few good gulps should do the trick. Around 10% is nice.

The perlite that I have got in the past was definitely not sterile. It had fly eggs in it, which turned into maggots, which then infiltrated all my supplies. Be careful!

That could only happen if you left standing water in the perlite. I can't type this enough, NO standing water should be left in perlite unless you want to breed bacteria and lower your FC's humidity. Perlite should be washed under the faucet, then allowed to drain in a spaghetti strainer before being dumped into the FC. There is no reason to worry about sterilizing perlite. We're using it in a fruiting chamber, and those by definition are not sterile. Adding peroxide is a waste of product. Bacteria need standing water to multiply to levels that will affect your crop, and peroxide breaks down in a matter of hours or less in the presence of bacteria or other organic compounds, rendering it useless.

This was in preparation for a grow. I bought it from the store and stuffed it into a big rubbermaid with the rest of my unused supplies. Upon noticing the maggots, I checked everything in the bin and came to the conclusion that the maggots had originated from the perlite. Maybe there was some water already absorbed in it when I bought it. I was just making the point that it doesnt come sterile. I never even ended up using perlite as I switched techniques.

I do have to say I've done hundreds of pounds of WBS in tubs with water/H2O2 as well as water/iodine and perlite without any contams ever, peroxide is effective IME for about 2-3 days at least its effects even though its been reacted within the first 24hrs. Now I'm in no way saying that simply soaking and draining perlite isn't the way to go it's a great tek IMHO but I have had personally great success with water/H2O2 as well as iodine/water (2 drops per gal.) Which IMO (iodine) is the better choice. I find with fanning often this setup is more stable and recovers quicker without ever needing to be rehydrated. Basically I'm saying it's not at all as contam prone as it's been made out to be and I say this from alot of successful grows people. The choice is always up to you try both and choice the one that best for you.

I never said it couldn't be used with great success. In the original post he asked if it comes sterile and I'm just saying that it doesn't come sterile. When you actually go to use it, you can kill whatever is on it in a number of ways. I wasn't saying that it was contam prone, its just it did not come sterile out of the bag. The perlite did not cause any contamination in a grow, it was left in the bag, in a bin full of other sealed supplies (coir, bird seed, poly fill, oyster shells, etc). Once again, I was by no means attempting to say it was a contam prone method of controlling humidity. As you stated, with the right preparations, it will rarely cause any problems.

I was quoting RR BTW. Yes perlite bas well as vermiculite come pretty much sterile right out of the bag because of the way it's made (super heated) and processed, now the container you put it in may not have been sterile (most likely).

Well thanks guys, next time i'm going to drain, and then bake the perlite, and try iodine.

**I have about an inch of perlite in my Tererium, and about half that is water, but all perlite did get soaked, but about half an inch is standing, no heater, thats it. Cakes are set on jar lids directly on perlite!
**But it has been a couple of days, and there is no humidity on the walls, or lid. Is this good/ normal? When i stick my hand in there it feels about 60% humid, i mean i can feel it!
**I have a themometer/humidometer in one, i bought at wal-mart $16.
It reads now 75f, and it says HI% humidity, but the cell phone lookin' thing is set directly on the perlite, so it might be off.
Also i'm noticing white bumps on the mycelium, will these turn to brown pins?

THANKS!

You should really try for two inches of perlite to get proper humidity. I see no reason to bake the perlite because it isn't an organic compound that will contaminate by itself. I still don't like the idea of standing water anywhere near a mushroom crop, but I can't argue with success, and many successful growers do things differently with great results.

I suggest you get a mechanical hygrometer that you can calibrate for your terrarium, and use the walmart special in your living room or office.

I've just noticed pinning starting at the very bottom.
Why isnt any starting on top or where most of the mycelium is?

Thats exactly why good call KaptKid! Thats where the moisture is best because of the verms moisture holding capabilities. If you were to have dunked and rolled you would have had much better pinning.
