Smell coming from mycobag?
    #5662127 - 05/22/06 10:02 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I have a mycobag in a dark room being kept at around 81 - 87 degrees, but usually a constant 85 or 86. It was inoculated about five or six days ago. No mycelium yet.

But today, as I entered the room, I noticed an odd, sort of unpleasant smell. Almost like... I don't wanna say shit or sewer water, those smells are way stronger than this, but it's hard to think of something to compare it to. Kind of an unpleasant earthy smell. Not too strong, I mean, I didn't gag or anything. But the room was filled with this smell, and I'm not sure if it was the mycobag or not, but it probably was. And the smell is gone now, after having the door open for no longer than a minute.

My question is, is this the normal smell for this kind of thing, or is something wrong?

Thanks very much.

I believe your heat is too high and something is wrong.

bacteria maybe.

does the filter patch smell sweet or fruity? Sour?
if so, it is bad.

Yes, sort of. Kind of. I dunno. It has a smell to it, I dunno if I would classify it as sweet or fruity... is it supposed to be odorless?

Also, if something is wrong, is it too late to fix it?

If your bag has bacillus, it's too late for it. Bacteria has a sweet or sometimes sour smell, almost like a rotten apple.

Never incubate bags over 80F. They make four to five degrees of heat on their own. I use regular room temperature.

Well, I identified the smell coming from the air filter patch... it's the exact same smell the whole mycobag has, the same smell I smelled when I opened up my mycobag the day I got it in the mail.

I lowered my heat.

If something is wrong, how can I tell? Will the mycelium be a color other than white? Or is there no real way to know?

Yes. If something is wrong, the mycelium will not be snow white.

Okay, I will check and if I have any question, come back to this forum with pictures. Unless it's like green or something. Then I'll throw it away and I guess buy a new mycobag.
