Misc Questions (originally on cultivation forum)

Hello,
I originally posted these on the Cultivation Forum (Beginners to intermediates, I guess), But I haven't gotten a response... I would be grateful for any info you can provide.
I plan to make my first growing attempts in a few weeks, and would also like to experiment as I go along with different substrates. I am going to use the PF tek on 12 jars and would also like to use the Shroom God's Straw Tek. My questions are:
1. Are there any vitamins or minerals that may increase the yields, potency, or size.
2. Is it possible to increase yields by adding vitamin/mineral suppliments to the PF substrate or straw? 3. Would it be beneficial to inject the cake with a mineral/vitamin solution:
a. On initial colinization of cakes b. between flushes 4. And/or the straw balls. 5. Why is it not reccomended to sterilize the straw for colonization????????? This doesn't make sense to me. 6. Is it true that the fungus like blue light? If so, why do they respond better to it? Would it be a good idea to have a 12/12 of blue/white light on the fruiting cakes? 7. Also, What plants could I grow with the Mushrooms that also be symbiotic. (Just curious.)
Thanksawholehelluvabunch, Esta

whoa man, you're getting way ahead of yourself, if this is your first attempt you shouldn't be worrying about increasing yield or potency, just follow the pf tek to a T and you'll hopefully be fine. I think you should have at least a little experience under your belt before experimenting so don't overcomplicate things. You need to familiarize yourself with how the mycellium grow and act. How's that cliche go again, oh yeah, you've gotta learn to crawl before you can walk. If you get even a few good ones from your first attempt count yourself lucky, many others haven't. It's a facinating learning experience, don't let greed get in the way. Well, that be my advice, good luck.

Your advice couldnt be more true...
Though some people just have to learn it for themselves. It doesnt hurt to ask questions of course, just one at a time may be better...

1-3: Read http://www.theforestfloor.org/forum/ikonboard.cgi?s=3c7f9d8c057fffff;act=ST;f=11;t=135 4-5. Off course one can sterilize straw. But if you do so, you must also inoculate it with a sterile inoculant under sterile conditions. If you don?t do so, then failure is guaranteed. Pasteurisation leaves some beneficial bacteria that screen the straw against other contaminats alive, sterilisation kills them all.
6. Primordia formation is trigered by the blue spectrum radiation. The blue spectrum IS A PART of the white light, so blue light alone won?t make any diference.

Thank you, Anno. I will have lots of fun interpreting all that into digestible form~!! I'll be sure to keep you posted if, in fact I delve as much into experimentation as I hope too...The realm of shroom cultivation has interested me for some time, but It hasn't seemed this tangible for me until now. I'm very excited to see what I can produce, maybe improve. Thank you again for the information!!

Millencolin,
Thank you for your invaluable advice. I hadn't really considered the depth and breadth of my undertaking. I just kind of took the idea and went with it (around the country and back). I had actually considered how impulsive I must have sounded. I think I am going to stay with PF tek and (possibly) Straw, But the information may someday come in handy when I'm a reclused mad mycologist, pacing back and forth in my clean-room, rubbing my hands together and chanting "They'll never be clean...they'll never be clean."
As far as greed goes, though...I don't lust for the psilocybin as much as the challenge. And I ultimately plan to redistribute the fruit and spores to the needy.
Thank you again, Millencolin...You have spanked me into submission... So to speak... uh......nevermind!
Peace and Harmony,
Esta

"Why is mycilium white? How fast does it grow? What is agar? Where does brown rice flower come from? Is there a God? Why am I here? What are those funny looking nipples on top? ............................. What are you doing with that syringe?.........Hey!"
"HEY!!!! AAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh."
I'll remember that the next time I post, Billyblastoff.
Thank you.

Agar is a polymer(a chain of monomers) and comes from a specific type of seaweed. When not powderized, it looks like clear/whitish pieces of seaweed. It melts when heated in water, and if the concentration is correct, it will form a solid matrix when cooled, just like jello. Brown rice flour is just grounded up brown rice. Brown rice looks exactly like white rice, except it's brown(heh). Of course, there are several variations of rice, such as long grain vs. short grain, sushi rice, etc.
