Max Safe Soak Time for WBS?

I made a boo-boo and dumped 5lbs of WBS into a bin and added water and immediately realized that they'll have to sit there for about 40 hours before I can PC them.
I've seen a tek that said (paraphrased) "some people soak for 12 hours, 24 hours, 36 hours but all that matters is that the grains are retaining all the water they can." I'm wondering if the WBS will begin to rot in that 40 hours, though.
It isn't a big deal ($2.50) to just ditch the soak and start with a new bag but if the response to this thread is "christ, 40 hours is fine" then I'll just keep it. If there is any concensus of doubt I'll ditch it.

Well it sounds like you have no choice but to wait and see.
No reason to toss it now, let it go and check it out.
Like you said it's cheap enough. Good luck

make sure the grain stays below the water line.... (use extra water)
if it swells above that, the humidity will cause the grains to germinate, and sprout. (learned that from my roomie... he makes too many mistakes)

Is it as simple as smelling and if I detect anything, toss it?

You will probably see mold in there when you get back. It will die in a pc, but yuck.

You wont see any mold..what it will do is develop more bacteria the longer you let it sit, even grow large clumps of it if you leave it for 3-4 days, and it will STINKKKKK. After 40 hours, it wont be to bad unless you stick your face in it or when you go to heat it up. I just did 2 batches of grain a week ago, one sat the longest I've let it go before, over 4 days (about 4 1/2, little less) and after a week the jars are still fine, and look beautiful. The next one sat 48 hours. I've left them sit for 72 all the time (I do alot of batches, sometimes you need to put them off).
That is all assuming you keep the water line above the grain, because as said, it will sprout otherwise. The PC will kill everything as long as you allow it to be at 15PSI for the full 90 minutes (60 minutes minimum).

Like everyone else said, you shouldn't have any problems. Another option is to load all of the WBS into jars and throw them in the refridgerator. This will slow down the sprouting process.
During one of my first grows, I loaded WBS into some jars and let them sit at room temperature for a day or two. Needless to say, they began to sprout; but I continued as planned. The fact that they had sprouted seemed to have little to no effect on the myco development speed.

Loading them in jars wouldnt be the best thing to do. Slowing germination or not, being fully submerged the grains wont sprout, taking them out of full water submersion and jar9ing them up, could cause sprouts. Not that its that huge of a deal if they do, still leaving them to soak is best IME.

I believe it depends on the content of the WBS. The stuff I use has alot of cracked corn in it, so if I let it set for more than 24hrs, or simmer for more than 1/2hr They will be way to wet.
I found this out the hard way, after 2 cases of QT jars went brown with that nasty sweet smell.

scatmanrav, with 9k posts to his name, says he regularly does 48 hours no problem so I don't expect to have any issues myself. The WBS has been under water since the start and the total time submerged will be 39 hours. Hopefully I'm in the green zone.
[fingers crossed]

I read somewhere that it is good to change the water if your gonna have to let it sit out that long. I guess to lessen bacteria present or something like that. you can put the wbs in jars ready to go in the fridge if you do not have time to run them, but I wouldn't wait more then 12 hours. That and let them sit in the PC and warm up some that way the glass does not crack from the temp change.
