I just found a nice softball sized one in a shady field of grass the other day. It was tastey sliced thin, dipped in seafood breader and fried in veggie oil. What you want to look for is the young white ones. There are at least two species of puffball that I am aware of that are toxic but niether the inner nor the outer color of those is white. You want one that is solid white and the same texture all the way through. Why the doubt Yessup? Puffballs are among the easiest edible mushrooms to identify as taking it down to species is not neccesary. The toxic puffballs hardly resemble the edible variety.

Have you had them before?
As long as they are white inside, they should be good. Some are filed with spores and become very dark or discolored with age - these are ones to avoid. I've had some grilled sliced giant puffballs before.. good stuff.

You never know... You might have still had egg residue left in the pan from breakfast.

thanx for all the help.
yeah the ones i find are very leathery on the outside and on the inside are almost pure white. i dont pick the ones that have that yellow oil inside(its oil, right).
anyways, they are aboout the consistancy of a really thick bread and have almost no taste at all eaten raw....
how should one go about cooking them?
