The thing that should not be?
    #565986 - 02/28/02 03:15 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

I don't know if there are any Mettalica fans out there on the shroomery or anyone who has happend to have heard the mentioned song by Mettalica. I like the lyrics alot especially the opening two lines. It kind of creeps me out because its so dark. I just wanted to know what this song is supposed to mean or what it means to you personally. Im sorry if this is out of place hear in the spirituality form but I am a big fan of Mettalica have heard most of their material seen three of their shows and for some reason this song sticks out from the rest. Thanks for your time.

Total abstinence is so excellent a thing that it cannot be carried to too great an extent. In my passion for it I even carry it so far as to totally abstain from total abstinence itself.
  -Mark Twain

"The time has come the walrus said, little oysters  hide their heads, my Twain of thought is loosely bound I guess its time to Mark this down, Be good and you will be lonesome
Be lonesome and you will be free
Live a lie and you will live to regret it
That's what livin' is to me
That's what livin' is to me"

I think its about the dark lord known to some as Lucifer.
I have an autographed 8x10 color photo of Metallica from '88 I am trying to sell if you are interested.
Also.. I don't think this should be in S&P.. let me see..

Hey, I was just doing a search for Metallica on these forums and I have to tell you that "The thing that should not be" is by far my favourite metallica song.

As you may know, this song was inspired by a story by H.P. Lovecraft, called "Shadow Over Innsmouth." There's a lot of explaining right here : http://www.encyclopedia-metallica.com/songs/smthingy.shtml

To me this is a song about a man goin' insane, written in a really poetic way.

"Messenger of fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light"

This could be about some kind of anxiety syndrome

"Hybrid children watch the sea
pray for father, roaming free"

You have difficulty knowing what 'group' you belong too; wanting too satisfy yourself, your friends, your parents all at the same time, while their morals are completely different off course. You need something you can hold on too

Here are the complete lyrics; what do you guys make of it?

The Thing That Should Not Be

Messenger of Fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light

Hybrid children watch the sea
Pray for Father, roaming free

fearless Wretch
insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
great Old One
forbidden site
He searches
Hunter of the Shadows is rising

immortal
in madness You dwell

Crawling Chaos, underground
cult has summoned, twisted sound

Out from ruins once possessed
fallen city, living death

fearless Wretch
insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
great Old One
forbidden site
He searches
Hunter of the Shadows is rising

immortal
in madness You dwell

Not dead which eternal lie
stranger eons Death may die
drain you of your sanity
face The Thing That Should Not Be

fearless Wretch
insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
great Old One
forbidden site
He searches
Hunter of the Shadows is rising

Listen to Primus' version. It's a lot better. I hate Metallica.

That's bullshit.

First of all, Primus did the song the exact same way Metallica plays it, so there's no personal touch whatsoever to their version.(personally I find Hetfield's voice really is perfect for this song)

Second, Metallica fucking wrote the song; so in fact you're saying that you like this song, but you don't like the band Metallica.

I can respect the fact that you hate metallica, but that doesn't mean Primus did something special on their 'cover.' If you wanna hear a real cover, with a different song structure and all, listen to Bob Dylan's original version of 'All along the watchtower' and then listen to Jimi Hendrix' version.
I think it's absolutely cool that Primus did a cover version; at least they didn't make a whole lot of money out of it that they didn't deserve. (like a lot of 'bands' do nowadays)

P.S Why exactly do you hate metallica? Does it have anything to do with their later recordings?
