Line breaks doubling up when converting from .doc/.sxw to HTML
    #5659424 - 05/22/06 08:39 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Here's the problem:

I'd like to start a little web page (nothing fancy) and I decided I want to use the OpenOffice office-suite to do it.

My problem is this: when I want to convert a .doc or .sxw file into HTML (thorough Save as.. HTML) all the line breaks and paragraphs double up.

This means that a linebreak becomes a paragraph by insertion of a blank line and that something which was a paragraph now is not one but two line breaks apart.

The result is piss-ugly.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to do it properly? I'd really like to use OpenOffice because it's what I'm used to. I do have MS Office but I try to avoid it and it too has the same affliction.

So I got a bunch of .sxw and .doc files and some crooked HTMLs; what should I do?

EDIT: it does not work to first create the HTML and then cut & paste the text into it from the .doc/.sxw because it will look good in the suite but if you save it and open with any browser, its all doubled up again.

Are you going between windows and unix? There have always been problems with unix and windows "end of line" markers being different. If this is the cause of your problem, then look at dos2unix and unix2dos commands (under unix).

In unix, you can use 'oc' to look at the characters of your file. Something like 'oc -tx2 my.html | more' will dump out a character by character display of your file, in hex. Look to see what is causing the problem. From there, you can use sed to filter the file and get rid of the offending characters.
