Anyone good at IDing?

I recently tried my first mushroom and found it one of the most enlightening experiences of my psychological life.
I then started looking into mushroom hunting and identification for myself, but find that IDing shrooms is particulary hard and have read that even trained mycologists find it difficult. Even figuring out if you're looking at a shroom that has bruised blue or not is hard sometimes.
I need help from anyone willing to give it, in IDing this one mushroom variety I have found that looks suspiciously magic.
CAP:
3-5cm Flattish with slight convex shape. Edge of cap slopes downward. Feels slightly furry and looks evenly textured. Colour varies from Light on the outside of the rim to dark at the peak. It is a strong yellow-orange colour in centre and a pale yellow on the outside.
Seems to bruise a slightly bluish colour on the outsides of the rim and the stem.. but the blue is questionable (it is not a bright blue, only a very slight tinge that might be blue).
GILLS:
Do not quite attach to stem and have 2-5mm gap in between them.
STALK:
Central stalk, aprox 2-4cm long. Evenly shaped all the way down (no differences in thickness). Darker at bottom of stem becoming lighter at top. Similar colouring to cap.
No Veil present.
Spore colour is a purplish brown colour. Do not know size or shape (no microscope).
Found grouped together with others growing on moist old rotting wood in fairly dark places.
I have pics that i while try place up later.
What do people think this is?
I am from Melbourne Australia.
Oh also - ate a small one (figured if i get sick, it was only a small one) about 15 mins ago.... don't know if i'm feeling placebo or if i actually feel something yet and not willing to eat more till i know for sure i won't die! lol

If you ate a deadly mushroom, which is a possibility, even a small one can kill you. I would induce vomiting and get a picture up ASAP so we can identify it.

sounds like you could be onto something, however eating something ur not 100% positive about will probably kill you, the size of it doesnt matter matter, if its poisonous you dead, even if u took just one nibble of a small poisonous mushroom you could still mess yourself up massivly.

You tried one mushroom??
...anyway, IDing really is not hard I do not believe. Once you have found a few it become quite obvious which mushrooms are active.
The only mushroom you are going to find in Melbourne at this time of the year is Psilocybe subaeruginosa. They bruise blueish/green and its obvious. There will be not "maybe" about it. The have dark greyish gills and grow commonly from woodchips and mulch through the winter months. The have whitish coloured, hollow stalks.
Look at photos on this website. Read some books, read some identification guides on this website and post pictures of your find to get a 100% ID. Once you have done it a few times you will find it easy.
Don't ever EVER eat an unidentified mushroom!!!! You could easily poison yourself!!! The mushroom you described could have been DEADLY Galerina Marginata if it were not for the purplish coloured spore print.
Don't ever EVER eat a mushroom you have not identified!

The thing is we don't really know how accurately you have described the colors. Lots of people come here hallucinating purple before they even eat a mushroom. It seems you were hallucinating blue...
The only orange fuzzy mushroom that I can think of, which also drops purple spores, would not be found growing from wood. The orange Deadly Galerina would be found in the habitat you described, is very common, sometimes bruises black (could be mistaken for blue), but drops rusty brown spores.
You barfed it up right?

Well, it's not a Galerina; that's good. It looks like a Hypholoma of some sort (Hypholomas drop purple spores and grow on wood). It is not active and possibly poisonous, though if I recall correctly, all the poisonous Hypholomas are bitter.
If you get sick, seek medical attention immediately and be sure to bring the remaining mushrooms with you for chemical analysis.
Please be more careful in the future.

I know, that was pretty stupid.. I've done a fair whack of research considering i only started researching a few days ago and have work n tafe in between all that..
I collected every variety of mushrooms from my backyard and wrote up little ID's of them, just to practice a bit and there were 2 types that i thought were maybes.
I think I need to get someone to help me ID them first.... Also might have to go and write about my first experience in another part of this forum - coz that was some crazy shit!
Not filling sick at all.. am feeling a little worried and anxious and feel like an idiot. Mainly coz that was stupid.

Hypholomas apparently are a little bit poisonous i dont think 1 will kill you but it could still make you very sick.
also its possible you may feel well for a few days before the damage done to your body starts to take effect, if you start to feel shit go to a hospital and give them the remains that u didnt eat.

A couple of days? aii.. Is there somewhere where I can read about shroom poisoning, effects, what to do etc..? Just In case and for future knowledge?
Also - called Victorian Posions information hotline.
Most the lady expects from hypholoma posioning is a bit of gastro upset. I searched around the internet and it looks like it was a hypholoma, nearly exact match for a US/UK version of this mushroom.
Are there any other types out there that would look like this? It looks nearly exactly like this -> http://www.guernsey.net/~cdavid/botany/files/hypholoma%20fasciculare/Hypholoma.jpg

Ohh also - while am at getting things ID'd... (lol)
I also found this little sucker - looks kinda dodgy, but i picked it coz it intrigued me.
It was growing alone in grass and was on a rather tall, strong stem.

Any ideas what this could be?

Your funny dude. Oops eating an unidentified mushroom can be bad.
One time when I was little I didn't know what this mushroom was so i was going to eat it but my mother stoped me and we took pictures of it. When I got older I identified them from the pic...it was destroying angel.
It makes me happy to know about mushrooms now! Makes me so worked up some times .

lol, yeah.
Also - update, it's been over 24 hours and the only slightly upset stomach I got was from wating mcdonalds for breakfast - go figure. lol.
So i think it was fine - I also did a bit more research on Hypholoma shrooms - turns out in some parts of the world, they're edible!
I have eaten some pretty strange things before.. so maybe my stomach's a bit more iron than others!
Shrooms are so interesting and I only just realized it!! I have a garden that is awesome fun, growing bulbs, broccoli, sweet peas, lettuce and a few other things.. so i spoze mushrooms are a kind of natural step.. the grow on the ground (or in shit, wood, people, animals, water...) and are an entirely new life form to explore!
Plus mushroom tripping is the most interesting thing I have ever experienced..

Dude.....its not neccessarily your stomache you got to worry about.....one bite of the wrong mushroom will bubble your liver and other organs like salt on a snail.....no such thing as iron stomache in that department.....and Hypholomas have accounted for deaths around the world......and you can find mushrooms that are just as good to cook with as the things you grow in your garden also probably also growing in your back yard

The vast majority of mushrooms are poisonous - there are something like 20,000 species , and its in the hundreds that are edible (perhaps someone knows the exact statistic?)
So if you dont know what you've got - its far more likely to be inedible. Its not often you hear of people eating an unidentified mushroom and it turns out to be ok. I've read numerous "I ate this - should I be worried?" posts here, and I dont think I've seen any edibles.
