Jar vs Bag Colonization
    #565923 - 02/28/02 02:10 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Did some jars and filter patch bags on the same day with the same spores and substrate. My jars are colonizing fine while my bags have stalled. Temp is the same. It seems that the bags should have a distinct advantage as they have greater airflow and surface area. Thoughts?

Jars are 1 pints with about 1/1/2 cups of substrate. The bags are medium -sized with about 2-2/12 cups of substrate. There is suface growth only on the bags, whereas the jars are about 35% colonized.

I am now wondering if my bags are bacteria-infected, but just don't show yet...

someone correct me if i'm wrong but from what I've read you want to have an elevated co2 level during colonization.. so initially your jars may go faster due to the elevated co2 level but the co2 gets too high in a jar and they sometimes stall...maybe with a filterpatch bag the air exchange isnt really benefical in the begining and takes longer to colonize initially is because of that...i know that when you do spawn transfers filterdiscs are great because of the rapid colonization of the substrate...they create alot of co2 fast so the air exchange is beneficial

I d say you are correct Abe plus there is more substrate in the bags. I got about a dime size growth in 4 days with TC, but with Azures it took longer so I think strain may have something to do also but I m not sure. I think mainly what it comes down to is air exchange and amount of substrate.
