Oh, it's probably only one of the most interesting weeks you will ever have in your life.
Imagine if you took a HUGE group of artists, partiers, yahoos, freaks, free spirits, and naked people and let them create their own society.
Then put them in the middle of the desert.
Add drugs.
Add fire. Lots of it.
Shake well.
Then you have burningman,
Anything you can imagine and then some will happen.
At one point I was wandering the flats when a dust storm rolled up on me. I hunkered down with my dust mask and goggles. When it cleared, a huge pirate ship ontop of a school bus picked me up where I was treated to a free bar. Then the pirate ship drove me to a party.
And that was one of the most normal things to happen all week.

There's some good videos here. They might help give you a bit more of an idea. But you'll have to go to really find out

Oh yeah, you need to bring everything.
Basically everything you need to survive a week in the desert.
Food, water, clothes, supplies
It's hot, but mostly you spend the day hanging out, drinking, exploring, taking it easy. Then when the sun and heat start to go away in the night it's time to party.
I partied everynight until the sun came up. It was always a rush to try and get back before the sun came up so that you can get those precious few hours of sleep before it became so hot.

I always told myself that during my years in college, when I'm still young enough to be idealistic but old enough to be independent, I would go to burning man.
I hope I can make good on that... perhaps even this summer, only months away.
I have to wonder how in the hell I could pull it off, though!
I could bust my ass to save up enough money to buy a ticket to attend, and then buy a greyhound ticket.
Then lies a problem. I somehow come across more money than I've ever actually had before and use it to buy a ticket and get myself to the nearest greyhound stop... now I need to find a way to get out to the event.
That's the part that's bugging me, I can't figure it out beyond that point.

It's worth going, and easier than you'd think.
Check out www.burningman.com
On the forums they have places to look for rides and such. Most burners are very cool and happy to help someone else get out there, espescially for their first time
I know a lot of people fly in and then hitch rides to the actual event (from Reno or some other close airport)
There's places (Burner Hostel?) where everyone who flys in congregate and then people with extra room stop by and pick up as many people as they can fit and go to the event.
It's always possible, lots of people who go don't have boat loads of money (damn artists/hippies : ) ) so there's a pretty good infrastructure set up to help people out.
It's a beautiful community, really down with helping people, they'll get you there if it's possible.
Go now, before the whole thing get's commercialized/yahoo'd. It's a slippery slope and I don't know how long it will last

I'd also have to take a week off from school in order to go, though...
Classes start around august 14th at my college. Damn unconventional schedule

Well, I wrote a journal while I was at burning man, you can take a look here if you want.
Basically burning man is a really unique thing that is hard to compare to other events. For everyone it is different... but a lot of people (especially from Reno) seem to think it's a big rave.
Personally I got the most out of it making friends and attending a lot of the lectures and events...
If you do go I would suggest going sunday night (rather than monday) and staying the full 7.5 days.

Yeah, I don't mean to put off the idea that it's all just party/party/party
Personally I loved the work people put into all the arts projects. Not just the big major sponsored ones, but the little things you see when walking around from camp to camp.
I've been trying to dream up what I'd really like to do in future years, at the moment I don't really have the resources/time for any kind of major projects, just costumes and such.
What I really want to do is make a giant ball-pit, like the ones at McDonalds, just on a huge scale. They had one in the Flight to Mars maze in 2004 and it was amazing, people were just frolicking around in there, and it was way deeper than we all expected. So with like 8 people in there things started grabbing us from below where we thought the bottom was. Kinda scary actually, sometimes you'd just get brushed, and a few people almost got dragged down, they were fighting to escape. All in good fun though

I was able to do it fairly cheaply, and I came from Canada.
You need a car and money for gas and food and water. I slept at truck stops and even scored a few free showers there and back.
It was only about 1000 dollars canadian in total, but a lot of the equipment (tent, stove, etc) I already had from treeplanting.
