I had a microscope a while back. Maybe it's still around somewhere. Is there a way to differentiate the two species using a microscope?
Yes, but you have to have a microscope capable of looking at spores.. Most of the cheap ones can't.
I have a list of microscopic features for Panaeolina foenisecii and Panaeolus subbalteatus if you want them. It's easier to just try and use the spore print color to separate them like MJ says.

The best way for checking the color on your spores without buying expensive equipment is to use the Eye-it-out-ascope. All thats needed to use the Eye-it-out-ascope is for a spore print to be taken on a peace of sranwrap. Take the sranwrap spore print and hold it out in front of a light. This makes it easy to see the color of the print.

ferns?

I have some interest in them.
I find mutant ferns all the time.. what appear to be new species even.
I wish I knew more about them, I might be seeing evolution in the process.
